Nina Idi - a third child in a society where families are allowed only two children - has been betrayed by the boy she loved and arrested by the Population Police for exposing other alleged third children. Angry and confused, Nina knows only one thing for sure: She is innocent of the charges. But now she is faced with the most difficult choice of her life: Get three other prisoners to admit they are shadow children and be spared herself, or refuse to cooperate and be killed. Libertarian book for teens

I read this as a teen and enjoyed it just as much if not more as an adult. This book is from a different characters perspective and I still found myself enjoying it just as much.

Outstanding

"Among the Betrayed" by Margaret Peterson Haddix is nothing short of a masterpiece in the realm of young adult dystopian fiction. The audiobook rendition takes this gripping narrative to an entirely new level. The narrator's compelling voice perfectly captures the suspense and emotional turmoil of the protagonist, adding a palpable layer of intensity to each scene. Haddix's storytelling prowess shines brightly as she weaves a complex tale of betrayal, courage, and redemption that keeps listeners on the edge of their seats. The seamless blend of a riveting plot and flawless narration makes this audiobook an absolute must-listen. Haddix has outdone herself, turning what could be just another dystopian story into a profound exploration of human resilience and the complexities of trust.

Compelling conflict, fast paced narrative

The world of the Population Police is further revealed and we get to see the story through a new narrator. Trust, betrayal and survival drive our characters in a fast paced tale of the Shadow Children. The story gets more intricate and the possibilities more intriguing.

Develops Young Minds

This entire series of books is great for helping develop young minds so that they can understand politics a bit more. The book series is set in a fictional dystopian society, but in many ways it mirrors our own society. I enjoyed reading it again for the first time since I read it as a kid. I still loved it, and I'm 28.

Not just for young adults 😊

I am enjoying this series of books. I’m an adult & wanted something easier to listen to before going back into a complicated & much longer book.
I listened to Ms Haddix’s series of
The Missing & thoroughly enjoyed it. I saw her 1st book in Among The Hidden & didn’t realize it was a series. I wanted to know what happened with Luke. I found the others in the series & purchase 3 more. I’ll get the entire series. I’ll look into other series of hers also. It also gives me something to suggest to parents for their children. I’ve worked in early childhood education & know sometimes parents need a little help, especially during this pandemic.

Terrible story

The most annoying aspect of this book is that most of the book is just manufactured drama. For example, the main character sees a spider, she would then wonder if it’s poisonous, is it going to kill her? Why did she sacrifice all this for a spider to kill her? Over 75% of the book are these annoying speculations. Additionally, the main character doesn’t have any common sense, which causes her speculate about a number of topics that make no sense. Just an annoying book to get through. I still can’t believe I finished it, but I do like to finish all the books I started.
