Publisher's summary

After firewalking in Polynesia, fundamentalist Minister Alexander Hergensheimer never saw the world the same. Now called Alec Graham, he was in the middle of an affair with his stewardess, Margrethe, and natural disasters kept following them. First, there was an impossible iceberg that wrecked the ship in the tropics; then, after being rescued by a Royal Mexican plane, they were hit by a double earthquake.

To Alex, the signs were clear that Armageddon and the Day of Judgment were near. Somehow, he had to bring his beloved heathen, Margrethe, to a state of grace, for heaven would be no paradise without her. But time was growing short. And, while he was at it, there had to be a way to save the rest of the world.

Critic reviews

"Heinlein's back in form, with a most refreshing and satisfying blend of ideas and storytelling...a limber, complex, and economical novel that disarms and often compels - with Heinlein's best theology-shaded fantasy since Stranger in a Strange Land." (Kirkus Reviews)

Excellent story of the new challenges of Job

This is an enjoyable look at religion and what it means to the entities that create it and those who follow it.

One of my favorites

This is one of those books I've read and reread over the years, and which I still enjoy. RAH had a definite view on things, and I very much enjoyed listening to this Audible version of the book. Well worth the credit.

Interesting

Thought provoking, irreverent, somewhat sacreligous in places, funny, and definitely a different spin on the after-life. Not great but good.

Audio Quality Issues

The volume of this audiobook is very inconsistent. At times the narration is incredibly loud, but a while later it will be so soft that it is difficult to hear. I have over 200 books in my Audible library and have never experienced this before. This appears to be a technical problem, and not an issue with the narrator, who does a fine job.

A Classic Farce

A timeless story of the dangers of preconceived notions of knowledge of the aspects of God.

Very listenable, just look past the love story

Yeah, he goes a bit overboard with the love story. I'll love you forever, oh my heart breaks, crap like that. But if you ignore that the book is extremely original and fun. I can't recommend it enough to any athiest :) #ReligionSquared #TorturedHero #AlternateUniverses #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

Job

the first 2/3rds was an interesting puzzle with the two love birds switching dimensions and loosing anything not touching them. Then when the evangelist Catholic guy tried to save his bride with an obvious misunderstanding of Christianity salvation, it got weird.

This was a very fun book until the hero got raptured. There are a bunch of quotes from old and new testament but Heinlein missed the full quote of "not being given or taking in marriage, in heaven... because we will have bodies like an angel." Angela we're all made. No need for genitals so no love making in heaven or eating either. Remember when Jesus told his disciples that he will miss wine, so no drinking either.

God always was and always will be and he created time for us. God is omnipresent. Jesus said he is the ultimate judge because he can see your entire past and future. We can't hide anything from that judge, He sees all.

Job was picked by God because Satan was bragging he could turn anyone away from God. God could see Job would not turn away from him so he wasn't testing Job, he was proving to Satan that he was purely heartless by hammering Job to the very limits that God allowed. God was not playing a mean joke on Job, he was showing Satan that he deserved to be separated from Him.

I did like the dimension puzzle, I just wish he would have had a more science fiction reason than just a mean god.
