Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

Vampires and humans live side by side thanks to an uneasy peace maintained by the Assembly. As an Arbiter for the powerful organization, Miles Watson is authorized to act as judge, jury, and executioner for anyone—living or undead—who breaks the law. But now Miles is up against a threat more sinister than anything he's seen in his centuries as a vampire. Historia
Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th-century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to get by - palm readings, zars, and a mysterious gift for healing - are all tricks, both the means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles and a reliable way to survive. But when Nahri accidentally summons Dara, an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior, to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to reconsider her beliefs.

Resumen del Editor
Winner of the Reddit Fantasy Award for Best Debut 2018.
A brilliantly imaginative epic fantasy debut, inspired by the bloody history of 20th-century China and filled with treachery and magic.
When Rin aced the Keju – the test to find the most talented students in the Empire – it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating, to Rin’s guardians, who had hoped to get rich by marrying her off and to Rin herself, who realised she was finally free from a life of servitude. That she got into Sinegard – the most elite military school in Nikan – was even more surprising. But surprises aren’t always good.
Because being a dark-skinned peasant girl from the south is not an easy thing at Sinegard. Fighting the prejudice of rival classmates, Rin discovers that she possesses a lethal, unearthly power – an aptitude for the nearly mythical art of shamanism. Exploring the depths of her gift with the help of psychoactive substances and a seemingly insane teacher, Rin learns that gods long thought dead are very much alive – and that mastering these powers could mean more than just surviving school.
For while the Nikara Empire is at peace, the Federation of Mugen still lurks across a narrow sea. The Federation occupied Nikan for decades after the First Poppy War and only barely lost the continent in the Second. And while most people calmly go about their lives, a few are aware that a Third Poppy War is just a spark away....
Reseñas de la Crítica
"A blistering, powerful epic of war and revenge that will captivate you to the bitter end." (Kameron Hurley, author of The Stars Are Legion)
"A thrilling, action-packed fantasy of gods and mythology...The ambitious heroine’s rise from poverty to ruthless military commander makes for a gripping read, and I eagerly await the next installment." (Julie C. Dao, author of Forest of a Thousand Lanterns)
"In The Poppy War, R.F. Kuang draws on history and myth to tell a relentlessly unforgiving story of war, vengeance, power and madness, with larger-than-life characters that evoke sympathy and rouse terror. Brace yourself." (Fonda Lee, award-winning author of The Green Bone Saga)

Nineteen-year-old Signa Farrow, orphaned as a baby, has been raised by a string of guardians, each more interested in her wealth than her well-being—and each has met an untimely end. Her last remaining relatives are the Hawthornes, an eccentric family living at the glittering and gloomy estate of Thorn Grove. Thorn Grove’s patriarch, Elijah, mourns his late wife, Lillian, through wild parties and drink, while eldest son Percy grapples for control of the family’s waning reputation and daughter Blythe suffers from the same mysterious illness that killed her mother.

Something is Missing
The story began very well with much potential but the immaturity, selfishness and short-sightedness of the protagonist made the story at times rather weary. Her amazing memory and exposure to great teachers only shows that vast amount of knowledge and horrific life changing experience does not guarantee an ability to be far-sighted and wise. Towards the end, I was rooting for someone else.
I will have to hope that the second book will bring about a more mature and reflective heroine. Keeping fingers cross

Good mental engagement
It was nice to see a new line of YA fantasy. One that isn’t overflowing with romance that overshadows the actual plot. One where the world building is fantastic but doesn’t take 5 initial chapters to create. It is one that allows difficult and mentally engaging themes to be addressed like the nature of war, humanity and its cruelty, strategy, feminism and mythology. Very good read, would recommend to late teenage and adult audiences.

Debiut?
No dobrze, to co to jest ta "The Poppy War"?
Rin, a właściwie Fang Runin, typowy underdog, dzieciak znikąd, trafia dzięki pracy i talentowi do najważniejszej w kraju szkoły oficerskiej. I to "coś" to Bog wow. Brzmi znajomo?
Wracając do książki.
Brudna, paskudna, obrzydliwa wojna.
Cukierkowatości i rozwiniętych emocji
Jakby książka wciskała mnie w glebę, głębiej i głębiej.
Taki zabieg ma swoje plusy, bo w końcu w obliczu wojny, rzezi i ludobójstwa trudno kogoś lubić, prawda? Zwłaszcza kogoś, kto walczy i zabija. Wojna zmienia.
No właśnie.
Wszystkie te rzezie, gwałty i potworności. Tępi mordercy, wielbiący przemoc i zadawanie bólu.
Magii w rozumieniu "machnę różdżką i wypowiem zaklęcie"
Polecam "The Poppy War" Rebeki F. Kuang?

to the ignorant baboon who left a bad review
not sure why you would be surprised by the violence depicted in a novel that has the word war in its title. your ignorance on historical matters is staggering and proves that while you may be literate you can still be staggeringly dim

The Rape of Nanking meets YA fantasy. What?!
The story has some serious tonal issues, going from light YA fantasy to a brutal and visceral recounting of the Rape of Nanking. The narrator really doesn't help these tonal issues. It sounds like she's reading a story to children and it does NOT work. She's not a bad narrator, just not suitable for this book.
I can't say I'd recommend The Poppy War, regardless of narrator issues. The fantasy element is great. The goal of educating people on historical atrocities is commendable. But the combination feels forced and wrong.
Take out the nauseatingly detailed chapter on what happened in Nanking, and you have a much more balanced story. One that maybe I could recommend.

Very brutal but well written
It’s a different story than one usually finds, very refreshing to have an oriental angle.
The story is very brutal though, war crimes and atrocities are described, and even if many have occurred in real life, they make for a very dark story.
The main character has life altering decisions to make, and the reader is left with the moral question of whether she chose the wrong path or the only viable path.
I’m interested to listen to the next book, but I have to wait a few weeks just to adjust and digest the first book.
I think I might have given it 5 stars as the book is really excellent in many ways, but the brutality, war crimes, hatred and complete disregard for others leaves me with a stone in my gut and so it’s a personal choice to not give it a full score. It reflects that I will not pick it up again at a later date, something I will, and have done with the books I give 5 stars.

CHAOS DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE
This was a focus read for me! Make no mistake this is dystopian in all sense of the word!
However, it is a glorious world building! I absolutely loved the book and the way it was set! One of my special interests are how writers choose to build a world and utilize "magic" and on that aspect It truly did not disappoint.
The narrator did a great job bringing it to life!
Though this isn't YA, the main characters are young and their *thoughts and behavior* reflect this. At times I wished they were less childish in angry emotions but then again they are just that! children, not allowed to be children!
There is a steady increase in dread and despair with hope only splattered like the glitter specs you keep finding even a year after you spilled some on your carpets!
they do as people do! their best! children in worship and command of God's who do not love them!
I love the characters! their reasoning and emotions, the way they interact with each other and the horrible world.
It is definitely worth a read! but I do recommend looking up TW's if you need to.
