Publisher's summary
For centuries the Warders' Circle on the neutral islands of Twaa-Fei has given the countries of the sky a way to avoid war, settling their disputes through formal, magical duels. But the Circle's ability to maintain peace is fading: The Mertikan Empire is preparing for conquest, and the trade nation of Quloo is sinking, stripped of the aerstone that keeps both ships and island a-sky.
When upstart Kris Denn tries to win their island a seat in the Warder’s Circle and colonial subject Oda no Michiko discovers that her conquered nation's past is not what she's been told, they upset the balance of power. The storm they bring will bind all the peoples of the sky together...or tear them apart.

Enter Mason Godfrey, Elena’s brother. He’s given me an ultimatum. Go back to my life, back to my medical residency, and most likely be hunted down—or come away with them to Chicago and start over. The golden, still-human prince of the city is impossible to resist. Despite the herd of eligible and eager bachelorettes who would rather see me dead than on his arm, his eyes keep lingering on me. Neither of us has forgotten that one magical night we had, right before my first life ended. Where does this lead, now that I’m a vampire and he isn’t?

Story
My name is Tawny Bigford. I'm 35, single, and I love hot showers. Seriously, all I wanted was a hot shower to start my day off right, but when I went to confront my landlady about the broken plumbing, I wound up talking to her corpse instead. Now, everyone thinks I'm to blame for her murder—not the best way to make an impression on the new neighbors, let me tell you. But how can I prove I'm innocent when I know practically nothing about the woman I supposedly killed?

Enjoyable but predictable
the fantasy world created here is fascinating and very worthy of further exploration. the characters are fairly interesting. the downside is that what you think is going to happen after the first couple chapters is what happens. there are some nice twists and turns along the way and some doubts are raised but in the end it's very predictable. all that being said, I hope they do have more stories set in this world because there seems to be a lot to explore.
