Publisher's summary

Ponyboy can count on his brothers. And on his friends. But not on much else besides trouble with the Socs, a vicious gang of rich kids whose idea of a good time is beating up "greasers" like Ponyboy. At least he knows what to expect, until the night someone takes things too far.

Featured Article: The top 100 classics of all time

Before we whipped out our old high school syllabi and dug deep into our libraries to start selecting contenders for this list, we first had to answer the question, "How do we define a classic?" The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might guess, though there’s a lot to be said for the old adage, "You know it when you see it" (or, in this case, hear it). Of course, most critically, each of our picks had to be fabulous in audio. So dust off your aspirational listening list—we have some amazing additions you don’t want to miss.

STAY GOLD PONYBOY...STAY GOLD!!!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would....I read this several times when I was a young girl...and saw the movie so many times...listening to this after 30 years was a real treat!

What other book might you compare The Outsiders to and why?

you cant compare this one....it is a classic...

Have you listened to any of Jim Fyfe’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I would...

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

They did...and it is and always will be a true classic!

Any additional comments?

This touched my heart just as much now as it did when I was 12yrs old..I had such a crush on Ponyboy Curtis, and posters of the character all over my room..I saw the movie at the drive in like 10 times and rented it on VHS every chance I got...Listening as an adult, I see a book about a boy with a golden heart...a story of survival, a beautifully tragic tale of friendship...and I loved it!!!!

Thought the plot was amazing, brought me to tears

This is probably one of my favorite books of all time. I had to read it again for school, and the voice was a little bit odd at times, but told the story well.

stay golden

A beautiful story. I'm glad I wasn't made to read this in high school, I don't believe it would have had the same impact. Thanks Ponyboy for helping me though my transition.

Voices ok

I love the story but I wasn't too fond of some of the voices. Pony boy's voice was ok so I guess that's the most important part.

Still a classic!!!

I love the movie I've seen it a 100 times so I bought the book. The book is almost the same as the movie, but the end is a little different. After the brawl it goes in to the court case to keep all three brother together. The movie starts off by Ponyboy reading about what happens. In the book at the end Ponyboy has to write a paper to pass a class. So at the end he writes the paper and tells what happens, how hard it is to be a teenager without parents. This is a great book and movie read and watch both!!

Always a good read (listen)

Any additional comments?

I've been reading and/or teaching this book since it came out in the 70ies. It will be one I keep on my phone so I can listen to parts of it in the car any time I want

Sentimental enjoyment

I listened to this today as I was running errands because my daughter is reading it. The narration was a little heavy handed on the accents and goofiness of the "gang's" voices, but the story is still lovely and brilliant.
