Echoing among the Blue Ridge Mountains were the cries of newborn babies that disappeared into the night. The screams of children nearly drowned out by the sound of crickets. Historia
In this powerful true crime memoir, an award-winning identity theft expert tells the shocking story of the duplicity and betrayal that inspired her career and nearly destroyed her family. Axton Betz-Hamilton grew up in small-town Indiana in the early '90s. When she was 11 years old, her parents both had their identities stolen. Their credit ratings were ruined, and they were constantly fighting over money. This was before the age of the Internet, when identity theft became more commonplace, so authorities and banks were clueless and reluctant to help Axton's parents.

But her struggles do not end when she leaves her family at the age of 13 to become a model. Honest and daring, Nearly Normal reveals the many ways that Cea's unconventional childhood continues to reverberate through the years.

Growing up on a farm in rural Mexico, where authorities turned a blind eye to the practices of her community, Ruth lives in a ramshackle house without indoor plumbing or electricity. At church, preachers teach that God will punish the wicked by destroying the world and that women can ascend to heaven only by entering into polygamous marriages and giving birth to as many children as possible.

Resumen del Editor
The sharp and surprising true story of a woman who finally sets out to understand her past, and the mother she had one day hoped to forget. Full of unexpected twists and unbelievable revelations, American Daughter is an immersive memoir that will have you on the edge of your seat to the very last minute.
For years, Stephanie Plymale, successful CEO and interior designer, kept her past a fiercely guarded secret. Only her husband knew that her childhood was fraught with every imaginable hardship: neglect, hunger, poverty, homelessness, truancy, foster homes, a harrowing lack of medical care, and worse. Stephanie, in turn, knew very little about the past of her mother, who was in and out of jails and psych wards for most of Stephanie's formative years. All this changed when a series of shocking revelations forced Stephanie to revisit her tortured past and revise the meaning of every aspect of her compromised childhood.
American Daughter is the extraordinary true story of a young girl growing up on the wrong side of the American Dream. Stephanie has slept in blankets on the floor of crowded apartments, lived in the back seat of a car with her siblings, and spent decades looking over her shoulder at a mother who might just as easily hug or harm her. American Daughter is at once a moving account of a troubled mother-daughter relationship and a meditation on resilience, transcendence, and ultimately, redemption.

Stella’s childhood is full of strange, life-threatening incidents - moments where ordinary situations like cooking eggplant or feeding the pigs inexplicably take lethal turns. When the Fortunas emigrate to America on the cusp of World War II, Stella and her sister, Tina, must come of age side by side in a hostile new world with strict expectations for each of them.

Bobi Conn was raised in a remote Kentucky holler in 1980s Appalachia. She remembers her tin-roofed house tucked away in a vast forest paradise; the sparkling creeks, with their frogs and crawdads; the sweet blackberries growing along the road to her granny’s; and her abusive father. An elegiac account of survival despite being born poor, female, and cloistered, Bobi’s testament is one of hope for all vulnerable populations, particularly women and girls caught in the cycle of poverty and abuse.

In an idyllic Los Angeles neighborhood, where generations enjoy deep roots in old homes, the O’Rourke family fits right in. Miriam and Craig are both artists and their four children carry on the legacy. When their teenage son, Nick, is diagnosed with schizophrenia, a tumultuous decade ensues in which the family careens off the conventional course. Like the 10 Biblical plagues, they are hit by one catastrophe after another: violence, evictions, arrests, a suicide attempt, a near-drowning - even cancer and a brain tumor - play against the backdrop of a wild teenage bacchanal.

My mother was bipolar, mentally ill, a sociopath that not only got pregnant by my 15-year-old father but went on to abuse me in every way imaginable. This is my story. People have a hard time believing that women, especially mothers who are supposed to protect their children, can be molesters and pedophiles, but my mother was one. I am not only telling my story for my own recovery, exposing the sins of the mothers in our family, but to help others to see that if this happened to them, they are not alone, and they can recover and have healthy, reasonably happy lives.

A Haunting and Beautifully Written Memoir
From the first scene of this memoir through the final words, I was immersed in Stephanie's story.Throughout this memoir, I felt like I was listening to beautifully written, poignant novel. Ms. Thorton Plymale and her siblings endured horrific trauma after trauma. They were failed time and again by their mother, who was trapped in her own prison of unresolved childhood trauma, and by the foster-care system. From free-spirited hippie culture, to a foster home that was beautiful on the surface, but pure evil behind closed doors, to a bus by the beach that was its own fairytale-like haven upon entering, I was invested in this story. The glimpse into the author's interior design business and process, was a wonderful surprise which I thoroughly enjoyed. I appreciated Stephanie's honesty about the struggles in her marriage, and with perfectionism, which is anxiety's high-achieving mask. For anyone who has a complicated relationship with their mother, or a family plagued with substance abuse, trauma, and mental illness, this book is for you. If you simply enjoy stories of survival, grit, resilience and forgiveness, this story is for you as well. I highly recommend listening to this book, but please take care. There are stories of child abuse and neglect throughout the book, that will be difficult to hear.
As an added bonus, Mozhan Marno's beautiful narration added to the immersive experience of the audio book. She was the perfect choice for this story.

Inspiring story, well told
Great narrator. Redemption story. Surprising, intriguing. Wish the author had been more introspective about her own mistakes — way she treated her husband and how she leaned into the flirtation with Owen, especially. She had been a victim of her mother, but she wasn’t the victim of her marriage. It was hard to listen to her talk like she was

Very good- hard to believe it wasn't fiction
This was really hard to get through in certain parts (I actually skipped over a few parts that I just couldn't bring myself to listen to) but it was really really good overall. It is an almost unbelievable story, which made it even more interesting. Definitely hard to process that someone actually went through what she went through and lived to tell about it. Highly recommend, but it is NOT for the faint of heart.
