Historia
The murder of brutal landowner Fyodor Karamazov changes the lives of his sons irrevocably: Mitya, the sensualist, whose bitter rivalry with his father immediately places him under suspicion for parricide; Ivan, the intellectual, driven to breakdown; the spiritual Alyosha, who tries to heal the family's rifts; and the shadowy figure of their bastard half-brother, Smerdyakov. Dostoyevsky's dark masterwork evokes a world where the lines between innocence and corruption, good and evil, blur and everyone's faith in humanity is tested.

After his great portrayal of a guilty man in Crime and Punishment, Dostoevsky set out in The Idiot to portray a man of pure innocence. The 26-year-old Prince Myshkin, following a stay of several years in a Swiss sanatorium, returns to Russia to collect an inheritance and “be among people”. Even before he reaches home, he meets the dark Rogozhin, a rich merchant’s son whose obsession with the beautiful Nastasya Filippovna eventually draws all three of them into a tragic denouement.

Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.

The Kingdom of God Is Within You is a nonfiction book written by Leo Tolstoy. A philosophical treatise, the book was first published in Germany in 1894 after being banned in his home country of Russia. It is the culmination of 30 years of Tolstoy's thinking and lays out a new organization for society based on a literal Christian interpretation. The Kingdom of God Is Within You is a key text for Tolstoyan nonviolent resistance and Christian anarchist movements.

Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

Historia
The two strikingly original short novels brought together here - in new translations by award-winning translators - were both literary gambles of a sort for Fyodor Dostoevsky. The first real expression of his genius, The Double is a surprisingly modern hallucinatory nightmare in which a minor official named Goliadkin becomes aware of a mysterious doppelgänger. Written 20 years later under the pressure of crushing debt, The Gambler is a stunning psychological portrait of a young man's exhilarating and destructive addiction.

Resumen del Editor
Brought to you by Penguin.
This Penguin Classic is performed by Miranda Pleasence, the stage and television actress best known for her roles in Notes on a Scandal, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and The Affair of the Necklace. This definitive recording includes an introduction by Richard Pevear.
Tolstoy's epic novel of love, destiny and self-destruction.
Anna Karenina seems to have everything - beauty, wealth, popularity and an adored son. But she feels that her life is empty until the moment she encounters the impetuous officer Count Vronsky. Their subsequent affair scandalizes society and family alike and soon brings jealously and bitterness in its wake. Contrasting with this tale of love and self-destruction is the vividly observed story of Levin, a man striving to find contentment and a meaning to his life - and also a self-portrait of Tolstoy himself.
This acclaimed modern translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky won the PEN/Book of the Month Club Translation Prize in 2001.
Reseñas de la Crítica
"The new and brilliantly witty translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky is a must." (Lisa Appignanesi, Independent, Books of the Year)
"Pevear and Volokhonsky are at once scrupulous translators and vivid stylists of English, and their superb rendering allows us, as perhaps never before, to grasp the palpability of Tolstoy's characters, acts, situations." (James Wood, New Yorker)

Historia
The heroine of Tolstoy's epic of love and self-destruction, Anna Karenina has beauty, wealth, popularity and an adored son, but feels that her life is empty until she encounters the impetuous officer Count Vronsky. Their subsequent affair scandalises society and family alike, and brings jealousy and bitterness in its wake. Contrasting with this is the vividly observed story of Levin, a man striving to find contentment and a meaning to his life - and also a self-portrait of Tolstoy himself.

The dashing cavalry officer stokes in her something exciting and defiant. Historia
Anna Karenina is widely considered to be one of Leo Tolstoy’s best works. Essentially a tragic love story, Anna Karenina tells the story of the rebellious and beautiful Anna and her passionate affair with Count Vronsky. Anna’s heartbreaking story unfolds against the colorful backdrop of 19th-century Russia, amid a hypercritical and unforgiving society that will never accept her for who she really is.

Often called the greatest novel ever written, War and Peace is at once an epic of the Napoleonic wars, a philosophical study, and a celebration of the Russian spirit. Tolstoy's genius is clearly seen in the multitude of characters in this massive chronicle, all of them fully realized and equally memorable.

War and Peace is one of the greatest monuments in world literature. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, it examines the relationship between the individual and the relentless march of history. Here are the universal themes of love and hate, ambition and despair, youth and age, expressed with a swirling vitality which makes the book as accessible today as it was when it was first published in 1869.

A Near-Spiritual Experience!
How was this different from other versions?
Both the narrator & newly translated text add a modern feel to the language, especially that of the novel's inner narrator, expelling many of the 'Thus', Thy', & other non-modern language.
Above all, I found this new text to be both life changing & life affirming all at once. This is possibly the only novel I've ever read to portray life's actual pace and keep me absolutely riveted at the same time.
Once the novel really got going, I literally could not put it down. I'd tell any and all literary-minded adults to read or listen. One of my college professor once called this novel the Holy Bible of Literature and I can't help but finally agreeing in full!

Fantastic rendition with few quibbles
I vastly prefer this recording on the Pevear-Volokonsky translation over that voiced by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Ms. Pleasance creates wonderful characterizations and keeps the pace brisk (aside from speeding the narration). There's a real sense that Ms. Pleasance is superbly aware of the hierarchy of social classes in Russia in the time the novel is set, which I deeply appreciate. Ms. Pleasance does have a slight lisp, which some might have a quarrel with, but I did not. I can't say that I caught any other mistakes, but on p. 602 Ms. Pleasance flubs the translated text and substitutes "Vronsky" for "Veslovsky".
I very much enjoyed the novel itself, the translation, and the narration, but I'm not yet an Anna Karenina partisan. There are some chapters on hunting and farming that leave me cold, and the central love affair in the beginning is rushed as is the dénouement at the end.

From our modern perspective, it's easy to overlook just how ground-breaking this novel was in Russia at the time of it's writing. I found the narration to be exceptional throughout.

Has a payoff but needlessly long for my taste
Far better narration than Gyllenhaal.
Long but reconciles beautifully. I considered quitting at many points but glad I didn't. Although I remark on it's length Tolstoys brilliance is demonstrated in his deep understanding of his characters and his accute understanding of people and human emotions. No one is a villain though there is one character that shows himself to be the hero by the end. I personally could butcher it to half it's length and likely be satisfied but there is a grace as it nears the end and characters that (by then) you know so well start to converge. I've read of at least one person recommending being able to walk away from the novel and come back to it. as I've finished it I think this is doable. the events aren't so tightly wound that you need to drive straight through. with the story taking place over (at least) over 2 years it actually seems appropriate to listen to it in parts with time to contemplate in-between sections. all in all a great book (if trying on one's patience)
