光源氏 三一歳
主な登場人物 明石の君、紫の上
あぢきなき松の風かななけばなき
小琴をとればおなじ音を弾く
光源氏はいよいよ京に明石の君を迎えようと決心し、たびたび上京をうながす手紙を送る。明石の君は身分の低さを思い悩み、また源氏をとりまく女性たちの中に入っていく自信もなく躊躇していたが、明石入道が都に持っていた大井の山荘を修繕し、そこに明石の君を住まわせることになった。
源氏は、紫の上の嫉妬をよそに、大井の山荘に足を運び、明石の君と久しぶりの再会を果たす。また三歳になる我が子明石の姫君(あかしのひめぎみ)と初めて対面し、そのたぐいまれな愛らしさに感動する。
明石の姫君の将来を思いやる源氏は、姫君の養育を紫の上にまかせるのがよいと考える。元来子ども好きな紫の上はその申し出を快く引き受けるが、源氏は明石の君が娘と別れる苦悩を想像して、思い悩むのであった。
