Historia
A murdered opera singer. A duke drenched in her blood. For Bow Street Officer Hugh Marsden, the brutal killing is a straightforward case. Ever since his exile from polite society, the chance to arrest a high and mighty peer of the realm has never presented itself. Hugh won't snub the opportunity now. But Audrey Sinclair, the Duchess of Fournier, is certain her husband is wrongly accused, and she's determined to prove it to the arrogant Bow Street officer, even if she must employ her most peculiar ability—or perhaps curse—to guide her investigation. After all, a duchess can do as she pleases.

The Earl of Wrexford possesses a brilliant scientific mind, but boredom and pride lead him to reckless behavior. He does not suffer fools gladly. So when pompous, pious Reverend Josiah Holworthy publicly condemns him for debauchery, Wrexford unsheathes his rapier-sharp wit and strikes back. The orphaned Elsie Camden learned as a girl that there were two kinds of wizards in the world: those who pay for the power to cast spells and those, like her, born with the ability to break them. But as an unlicensed magic user, her gift is a crime. Commissioned by an underground group known as the Cowls, Elsie uses her spellbreaking to push back against the aristocrats and help the common man. Elite magic user Bacchus Kelsey is one elusive spell away from his mastership when he catches Elsie breaking an enchantment. To protect her secret, Elsie strikes a bargain.

Enjoyed the story
I liked conversation back and forth between the characters. Loved the time period. The reader did a wonderful job voicing the different characters.

A Deadly Affair
Really liked all the characters, Always enjoy historical cozy mysteries with a clean sprinkle of romance. I think this would make a great tv series like Miss Scarlet and the Duke.

Mystery Maven
Take a chance on a new series, especially if enjoy series as I do. Well done us of existing model; independent woman of the age, rugged male lead and a really good mystery. Add outstanding narration and we have a good book. On to the next entry. Enjoy.

Pretty Good
A Deadly Affair is a pretty good book. The plot is a bit out there. Mikaela got on my nerves a bit because she kept making the same mistake over and over again. But otherwise, it was an entertaining book. I might get the next one.

overall a very satisfying listen
the story was good, characters interesting with enough breadcrubs of backgreound to give them depth, and the reader had a good range of voice to give the characters individuality

Meh
I thought this book would be right up my alley. However, the MC has no character development. She makes the same mistakes over and over. The narrator is decent, a bit shrill on the female voices. Overall there are much better historical murder mysteries. Skip it.
