Being a defective marks me in the eyes of the Solis Fae. Wingless. Magicless. Weak. To my kind, I’m nothing—not when strength is needed to survive the perpetual snow and ice that shrouds our northern continent in endless winter. Just hours after humans are born, the gods take what little power we have. In return, they protect our borders from the vicious, merciless fae. The humans who manage to keep their power are known as the corrupt. And they are burned. When my forbidden power is discovered, I’m forced to flee my tiny village and the life I adore. To survive, I make a desperate bargain with the mercenary who abandoned me at my weakest moment. Our deal is simple: I’ll help him and his mysterious friends sneak into the city, and he’ll help me learn to wield the strange, dark power I’ve always kept hidden.

Story
There are three rules to surviving the Fae—and I'm about to break every single one. Rule #1. Never cross into Faerie. When I'm chased across the wicked border and caught by its reclusive ruler of the sky, the pretty trickster with a clever tongue offers me a deal. Rule #2: Never bargain with a Fae. But I don't have a choice. For thirteen days, I have to survive in his mountainous maze of sinister paths, deceptive stairways, and devious creatures. Refuse, and my sisters will suffer as punishment. Rule #3: Never fall for the enemy. I should have known my sexy captor wouldn't play fair.

Slow burn
The process in this book. Thea is probably one of the most brave women/characters I have ever read through everything. She tries to persevere and complete the task that she wants to complete in her young life add in Hawthorne, and it warms your heart to know in to see the development of the characters within this book. I can’t wait to read the next!

Romantasy at its finest!
Mainly listening on audio which is really good. The female voice is like this sultry, alluring smokers voice. It works. Also dual pov has a male voice which matches the description of Wilders deep timber voice, sounds powerful and it’s hot. I’m going to be listening to book 2 as well.
This book had the perfect amount of action and plot along with burns and desires and just the right amount of spice and longing. At first I thought, ‘man they really hate each other this is going to take awhile for them to see eye to eye here’ but it turns out for the better. Enemies to lovers trope along with a little forbidden love. I also like that there is no miscommunication, they own up to their feelings quickly and FMC knows and voices what she wants.
I’m antsy to see where this story goes in book 2 of the series. The build up is amazing and has me whirling. There are many new questions to be answered and secrets to be revealed!
Also, I hear book 2 has more spice and relationship, so I’m hopeful for the MC. Eee!

I absolutely loved this book. I honestly waited to finish the first one until 2 came out because I knew I'd hate the waiting, lol. Thea is a badass and is truly so captivating. This book is great, especially for those that love series like ACOTAR or The Serpent and Wings of Night or Dark Window. Hits all the romance tropes I’m a sucker for with a rockin’ female lead.

Came for the MMC, stayed for the FMC 💪 🗡️ ✨
I read Slaying the Shadow Prince first and enjoyed it so figured I would keep reading in the same world. I found it really nice to know the back story behind several of the passing comments the MMC made throughout. As with Slaying the Shadow Prince, the book did not instantly capture me. There was a decent amount of setup in the beginning where I wasn’t sure I was in it, but I stuck it out because I recognized the MMC and wanted to hear more about his story. So glad I did, things picked up and went. I love the strong, capable FMC, the slow burn, the unexpected twists, the sass/banter, and the found family. Overall 3.5 stars, worth the read! Interested in heading over to the next book!

EVERYTHING
What does one say when they’ve read such an amazing book that all they want to do is scream??? The world building throughout this book was immaculate. The side characters are freaking bomb. The FMC is a strong badass fighting against oppression and evil creatures. The MMC is a hunky hottie war leader who could kill you with a flick of his pinky finger. Yes, just the one pinky finger. I screamed many times. I laughed many times. And I was to the point of tearing up. And I haven’t cried because of a book since the ending to Allegiant. If you liked Divergent or Fourth Wing, you will LOVE this book.
