Même s'il n'est pas homme à accorder de l'importance à la rumeur, Furlong se souvient d'une rencontre fortuite lors d'un précédent passage : en poussant une porte, il avait découvert des pensionnaires vêtues d'horribles uniformes, qui ciraient pieds nus le plancher. Troublé, il avait raconté la scène à son épouse, Eileen, qui sèchement lui avait répondu que de telles choses ne les concernaient pas.
Un avis qu'il a bien du mal à suivre par ce froid matin de décembre, lorsqu'il reconnaît, dans la forme recroquevillée et grelottante au fond de la réserve à charbon, une très jeune femme qui y a probablement passé la nuit. Tandis que, dans son foyer et partout en ville, on s'active autour de la crèche et de la chorale, cet homme tranquille et généreux n'écoute que son cœur.
Claire Keegan, avec une intensité et une finesse qui donnent tout son prix à la limpide beauté de ce récit, dessine le portrait d'un héros ordinaire, un de ces êtres par nature conduits à prodiguer les bienfaits qu'ils ont reçus.
