La bellezza del paesaggio mediterraneo può rimandarci all'immagine del paradiso terrestre: i generosi boschi di olivi che con le loro esistenze millenarie ingannano il passare del tempo; i giardini verdeggianti di capperi e zibibbo, ostinatamente coltivati sulla terra "africana" di Pantelleria; le arance, i limoni, i mandarini che esplodono scintillanti di giallo e arancione tra il castello di Maredolce e le coste di Grecia, Tunisia, Spagna; i resti preistorici di leccio e sughera, olivastri e filliree, sepolti e riscoperti all'interno di grotte ombrose. A differenza dell'Eden biblico, però, questa realtà possiamo visitarla ogni volta che lo desideriamo; e in ogni pianta riconoscere un istante della nostra storia.
Giuseppe Barbera ci guida in un viaggio inebriante nella diversità di profumi, colori, suoni e sensazioni che compongono questi territori: tra vita e cultura, botanica e mitologia, mondo esteriore e mondo interiore, Barbera ripercorre i molteplici incontri di uomo e natura sulle sponde del Mediterraneo attraverso le tracce che hanno lasciato in Sicilia, luogo simbolo per leggere l'evoluzione del paesaggio nell'Antropocene.
Dai misteriosi legami che uniscono i fichidindia della campagna etnea e i nopalitos del Messico azteco alle colline sopra Pergusa, coperte di "bellissimo frumento, dono prezioso di Cerere", come le descrisse Goethe nel suo Grand Tour; dalla devastazione degli agrumeti della Conca D'Oro durante il "sacco di Palermo" al recupero della Kolymbethra, per decenni lasciata al degrado e all'oblio nell'antichissimo bosco di mandorli e olivi della Valle dei Templi; fino alle "cattedrali nel deserto" che hanno stravolto il territorio di Gela in favore di un'industrializzazione effimera quanto il miraggio della presenza di giacimenti petroliferi.
Il giardino del Mediterraneo è il racconto di questa irripetibile anomalia geografico-umana durante le epoche passate e, allo stesso tempo, una riflessione sul modo in cui possiamo preservarla dalle nostre autodistruttive manipolazioni presenti e future. Un punto di vista inedito su ciò che ci circonda, per capire che un paesaggio non è solo alberi e frutti e terra: è la meraviglia invisibile; è lo sguardo di chi lo abita.
