Publisher's summary

Shannon Chakraborty, the bestselling author of The City of Brass, spins a new trilogy of magic and mayhem on the high seas in this tale of pirates and sorcerers, forbidden artifacts and ancient mysteries, in one woman’s determined quest to seize a final chance at glory—and write her own legend.

Amina al-Sirafi should be content. After a storied and scandalous career as one of the Indian Ocean’s most notorious pirates, she’s survived backstabbing rogues, vengeful merchant princes, several husbands, and one actual demon to retire peacefully with her family to a life of piety, motherhood, and absolutely nothing that hints of the supernatural.

But when she’s tracked down by the obscenely wealthy mother of a former crewman, she’s offered a job no bandit could refuse: retrieve her comrade’s kidnapped daughter for a kingly sum. The chance to have one last adventure with her crew, do right by an old friend, and win a fortune that will secure her family’s future forever? It seems like such an obvious choice that it must be God’s will.

Yet the deeper Amina dives, the more it becomes alarmingly clear there’s more to this job, and the girl’s disappearance, than she was led to believe. For there’s always risk in wanting to become a legend, to seize one last chance at glory, to savor just a bit more power…and the price might be your very soul.

Not City of Brass, A Fun Swashbuckling Adventure

If you're coming here after City of Brass know that this isn't a repeat experience. While for that series I felt like there was hardly a moment where I knew what was coming. In some ways it was a hard story to get through because of how hopeless the situations seemed at times.

This adventurous tale is quite a nice contrast. While significantly more straight forward and with far less political intrigue, this shorter novel still leaves you wanting the next story to come out already. Chakraborty's amazing worldly details again pull you in and paint a vivid picture of the lives of these characters, and as usual, her characters are vivid, layered, and a joy to read about.

While I myself may miss the complicated plots of City of Brass, this story didn't try to be the other. It did a very good job at what it was trying to do.

Slow at first but amazing audio

This has to be one of the few books that I think actually comes across better in audio form. It feels like a spoken story instead of just a read book. The story was a bit slow to get going but the narrator was amazing. And the decision on how to handle the breaks from the story when Amina talks to Jamal was so creative.

fit for Scheherazade

at once enjoyable and believable along with believable characters and fantasy. I loved the way it was produced, making you believe it was read by the people that were in it

Superbly read and told swashbuckling adventure

This story has exceptional readers who make the adventure all that much more enjoyable. I look forward to more. There are so many interesting characters, and so much of the world for them to explore, I can't wait to follow them wherever they go next. It made me wish Yemen and Somalia was safe for tourists. I'd love to explore some of the places in this story in person.

Awesome book… tv series please!

A well told story in a far too neglected setting…

I have never been more nostalgic for the al Qadim DnD campaigns of my youth than I am now right after finishing this book…

I want more… please write the next story… and if there are any streaming services reading this… make it into a series… absolute storytelling gold…

Great adventure story

The production quality in the beginning was a little poor…as the book picked up, the reader realizes it is a narration strategy.

Wonderful storytelling

Loved it all except the weird back and forth of the storyteller in the beginning and occasionally throughout. I couldn’t hear what they were saying! But most of it was not like that.
