Born into the troubled kingdom of Albermaine, Alwyn Scribe is raised as an outlaw. Quick of wit and deft with a blade, Alwyn is content with the freedom of the woods and the comradeship of his fellow thieves. But an act of betrayal sets him on a new path - one of blood and vengeance, which eventually leads him to a soldier's life in the king's army. Story
Cahan du Nahare is known as the forester—a man who can navigate the dangerous Deepforest like no one else. But once he was more. Once he belonged to the god of fire. Udinny serves the goddess of the lost, a goddess of small things; when she ventures into the Deepforest to find a lost child, Cahan will be her guide. But in a land where territory is won and lost for uncaring gods, where temples of warrior monks pit one prophet against another—Cahan will need to choose the forest or the fire—and his choice will have consequences for his entire world.

Story
For the first time as an Orbit special edition, Brent Weeks's blockbuster novella Perfect Shadow tells the origin story of the Night Angel trilogy's most enigmatic character: Durzo Blint. Gaelan Starfire is a farmer, happy to be a husband and a father; a careful, quiet, simple man. He's also an immortal, peerless in the arts of war. Over the centuries, he's worn many faces to hide his gift, but he is a man ill-fit for obscurity, and all too often he's become a hero, his very names passing into legend.

The gods gifted their champion, Daemron, with three magical Talismans: a sword, a ring, and a crown. But the awesome power at his command corrupted Daemron, turning him from savior to destroyer. Filled with pride, he dared to challenge the gods themselves. Siding with the Chaos spawn, Daemron waged a titanic battle against the Immortals. Story
How much must one pay for an hour of youthful folly? The Pureblood Registry accused Lucian de Remeni-Masson of "unseemly involvement with ordinaries", which meant only that he spoke with a young woman not of his own kind, allowed her to see his face unmasked, worked a bit of magic for her.... After that one mistake, Lucian’s grandsire excised half his magic and savage Harrowers massacred his family.

Some of the parchment pages were the color of cream, thick and substantial, made to last many, many lifetimes. Other pages were thin and desiccated, positively yellow from age, and crackled alarmingly as Van Richten turned them over. There were no ornate illuminations, no fussy borders, only lines of plain text in hard black ink. The flowing handwriting was a bit difficult to follow at first; the writer's style of calligraphy had not been in common use for 300 years. No table of contents, but from the dates it looked to be some kind of history.

Welcome to Tiankawi - shining pearl of human civilization and a safe haven for those fleeing civil unrest. Or at least, that's how it first appears. But in the semi-flooded city, humans are, quite literally, on top: peering down from shining towers and aerial walkways on the fathomfolk - sirens, seawitches, kelpies and kappas - who live in the polluted waters below. For half-siren Mira, promotion to captain of the border guard means an opportunity to help her downtrodden people. When extremists sabotage the annual boat race, violence erupts, as does the clampdown on fathomfolk rights.

Great Book but Imani isn’t right
I loved this book and Devante Johnson did great but I dreaded every time the female characters came up because Imani Parks could not voice the characters well at all. If they keep her maybe she won’t sound so monotone in the next book and actually convey emotion through her reading. Honestly I can’t wait for the next book this is my third series I’ve started by Dalglish and I’m ready for more, hopefully we won’t have to wait long.

lackluster narration
I enjoyed the story but the narrators read so slow
it's almost painful to listen to at times. the male narrator isn't so slow ( I only had to speed him up to 1.20) but the female narrator robs every scene of any intensity or action because she's reading one word every three seconds.
that being said this was a very enjoyable first installment and it's got me excited and curious about what come next

Slowest narration I’ve heard
The book itself was OK, but the narrating was slow and monotone. I had to accelerate the listening speed just to bear it.

Very unoriginal. Clearly a socially left leaning author.
The story itself is not horrible but it just seems like I've read it all before. The dialogue has a Joe Ambercrombie feel, just not as good. Meaning there is a lot of cursing and graphic fight scenes. One such scene, a main female character and her girlfriend are holding hands on a bar. An enemy soldier sees them and makes a comment about it. She waits for them to leave and ambushes them with an axe. On one hand, it was the enemy, and they were supposed to be bad guys. However, it was clearly revenge for not accepting her holding a girl's hand, not a strategic attack against an enemy. I found it petty, extreme and unnecessary. Is that really the message the author wants to convey; if they hurt your feelings then chop them and anyone associated with them up into little pieces? The characters that are supposed to be heroes are crude and unlikable. It is the author's art and their prerogative to put whatever they want in their books. I'd prefer it if they just told a story and leave controversial topics for Hollywood is all. I have listened to several hundred book on Audible. This is probably the 3rd one I was unable to even get through the first half. Will not be wasting my money on another of the author's books.

reddit trash
this could have been a pretty decent book, but it's just so overwhelmingly reddit that it's hard to listen to. the story is about the main protagonist's city, which is led into battle by a rainbow lion (really) being conquered by an empire wearing grey ( just like the evil confederacy!!!!). the story takes constant asides to talk about this this character's gay husband, that character's lesbian girlfriend, not to mention the chapter dedicated to the time a transgender in a dress was being bullied and then was saved by the heroic gay warrior, and then admonished for his/her doubts about transitioning by said gay warrior because apparently transitioning is the will of their goddess (really). it's just incredibly cringe
