Loved this so much!

It doesn’t seem like this author is well known but I just blew through two of her books in like 4 days they were so good. This one was excellent and grabbed my attention immediately but you have to really be paying a attention the last hour or so. It’s wild.

that ending....

The story was so good and had such promise until that weird twist came and the ending wasn't great, I almost had to go back and listen again to have the time lines make sense. The narrator was excellent as always!

Listened to this book in one day

Great twists and turns, and the narrator was outstanding. This book kept me up all night! The only thing that puzzled me was the significance of the homeless woman....I thought for sure she would have an intregal role in the story. Perhaps she was just a red herring.

shocking ending

Started out being childish, almost gave up. A lot of whining the majority of the book, however, if you can hang in until a round chapter 50 it does pick up and gets much better.

Overall Good - Worth Listening too

Worth listening too. I almost got “lost” at the plot twist. Had to go back an listen again to a couple of chapters, but I think it was more me not paying attention.

Twisty

I liked the concept of the story. Of course I pictured two very different characters in this. But the twist was bravo.

I love surprises!

Great book. I can usually figure out what's going on before I am halfway through. This one kept me guessing until the end!

Not very Frieda-ish

I decided to read this because let’s face it Freida is the best psychological thriller writer on the market right now. I have absolutely loved all of her books. I found myself getting very confused with this book and didn’t enjoy it as much. But that’s OK… Not every single book that an author writes is going to be for you or for me. I’m excited to move onto another one of her books. Highly recommend this offer. I really enjoy the voice actress as well. If you haven’t read the housemaid and the housemaids secret, you don’t know what you’re missing.

My favorite of McFadden's, and not bizarre at all!

I disagree wholeheartedly with what is now the top review here, which claims this novel is "too bizarre." What is your definition of bizarre? If you mean that it isn't told in a predictable fashion, then fine, that's what this is. But that isn't what "bizarre" means. To be honest, there isn't anything out of the ordinary in this tale at all, so I suspect what the reviewer might actually have disliked was the kind of plot twist and careful story construction that try to trick you. Well, you will certainly find that here, but it didn't strike me at all as contrived or farfetched, and it does not detract from what is a very engaging and immersive story. I loved it, and looked forward to finding time to listen every day. I'm really sorry it's over!

I wish I could give you an idea of the kinds of twists I'm talking about without any spoilers (don't worry, I won't ever spoil a good book), but I really can't. Maybe I'll just say that it ended up reminding me very much of another book that has been on Audible's best seller lists for the past few years or so . . . it's domestic suspense set in New York, and if you listen to other books in this genre, you probably listened to that one too. Not everyone liked it, but considering the numbers, most people did. (Yes, I know that isn't exactly helpful since I can't tell you the book, but my hands are tied! Okay, look, fine . . . Julia Whelan narrated it and the print version was published by St. Martin's Press . . . if you really want to know, you have the information you need to do some research.)

Anyway, I thought the book was fantastic, and so was the narration. I hope McFadden gets Nicol Zanzarella to narrate more of her books, because she is far better than most of the other narrators I've heard read this author's work in the past. In fact, I've been on a McFadden steak recently, but since I'm getting to the end of the books she wrote that don't have excessive narration complaints on the review pages, I think I may have to take a break and listen to more from this narrator now.

I highly recommend this.
