Throughout her childhood, Safiya Sinclair’s father, a volatile reggae musician and militant adherent to a strict sect of Rastafari, became obsessed with her purity, in particular, with the threat of what Rastas call Babylon, the immoral and corrupting influences of the Western world outside their home. He worried that womanhood would make Safiya and her sisters morally weak and impure, and believed a woman’s highest virtue was her obedience.

In this prize-winning poetry collection, we watch as the cartographer, used to assuming control over a place by mapping it, is gradually compelled to recognise a wholly different understanding of place as he tries to map his way to the rastaman’s eternal city of Zion. As the book unfolds the cartographer learns that every place name comes freighted with history, and not every place that can be named can be found.

Let Us Descend is a reimagining of American slavery, as beautifully rendered as it is heart-wrenching. Searching, harrowing, replete with transcendent love, the novel is a journey from the rice fields of the Carolinas to the slave markets of New Orleans and into the fearsome heart of a Louisiana sugar plantation.

In the 1970s, Topper and Sanya flee to Miami as political violence consumes their native Kingston. But America, as the couple and their two children learn, is far from the promised land. Excluded from society as Black immigrants, the family pushes on first through Hurricane Andrew and later the 2008 recession, living in a house so cursed that the pet fish launches itself out of its own tank rather than stay. But even as things fall apart, the family remains motivated, often to its own detriment, by what their younger son, Trelawny, calls “the exquisite, racking compulsion to survive.”

On a hill overlooking Bell Village sits the Changoor farm, where Dalton and Marlee Changoor live in luxury unrecognizable to those who reside in the farm’s shadow. Down below is the Barrack, a ramshackle building of wood and tin, divided into rooms occupied by whole families. Among these families are the Saroops—Hans, Shweta, and their son, Krishna, all three born of the barracks.

Historia
In this original and trenchant work, Christina Sharpe interrogates literary, visual, cinematic, and quotidian representations of Black life that comprise what she calls the "orthography of the wake". Activating multiple registers of "wake" - the path behind a ship, keeping watch with the dead, coming to consciousness - Sharpe illustrates how Black lives are swept up and animated by the afterlives of slavery, and she delineates what survives despite such insistent violence and negation.

Inspired by Nigeria's folktales and war, Under the Udala Trees is a deeply searching, powerful debut about the dangers of living and loving openly. Ijeoma comes of age as her nation does; born before independence, she is 11 when civil war breaks out in the young republic of Nigeria. Sent away to safety, she meets another displaced child, and the star-crossed pair fall in love. They are from different ethnic communities. They are also both girls.

Resumen del Editor
In the wake of Marlon James' Man Booker Prize-winning A Brief History of Seven Killings, Augustown - set in the backlands of Jamaica - is a magical and haunting novel of one woman's struggle to rise above the brutal vicissitudes of history, race, class, collective memory, violence, and myth.
Ma Taffy may be blind, but she sees everything. So when her great-nephew Kaia comes home from school in tears, what she senses sends a deep fear running through her. While they wait for his mama to come home from work, Ma Taffy recalls the story of the flying preacherman and a great thing that did not happen.
A poor suburban sprawl in the Jamaican heartland, Augustown is a place where many things that should happen don't, and plenty of things that shouldn't happen do. For the story of Kaia leads back to another momentous day in Jamaican history, the birth of the Rastafari, and the desire for a better life.

Best book I've read in a long time
This book touched my soul on so many levels. It was beautifully written. It took me through so many emotions, and it's crazy to think that all these events took place in one day. This will forever be one of my favorite books.

Brilliant Novel
I have Taught Caribbean literature at a university, and I think this is one of the very best new novels from this area. It is one of the best novels I have read this year: beautifully written, with memorable characters, humor, Pathos, tragedy, set in a very rich Caribbean setting. This author is one of the very best. I highly recommend this book. Edward Hower

Compelling story
Beautifully written and read this story brings about just how United we really all are. This tragedy is one that is felt by the reader, takes you to Augustown and beyond into the heavens and makes you question what you do as well as what you don’t do and it’s significance. A must read.

A profound exposé of the August town experience
The voice acting is some of the most incredible I have ever heard.
This novel combines all the elements of Jamaican society with a deeply moving storyline. You can decide how real it is. One of the most enlightening pieces of fiction I have read.

Addicting
When I started to listen to this book I wasn't really interested but I had to listen because of a book club and I am so glad I did, Ma Taffy surprises me every step of the way. I love how Gina had a romantic affair without her peers knowing, hated what the teacher did to her son, but I hated how it ended, is like the book took me on a high and it just ended like that. I never would have guessed the ended would have been like it is left me disappointed. But overall great story.
