Publisher's summary

Instant #1 New York Times Bestseller!

Michael Mann, four-time-Oscar-nominated writer-director of The Last of the Mohicans, The Insider, Ali, Miami Vice, Collateral, and Heat teams up with Edgar Award–winning author Meg Gardiner to deliver Mann’s first novel, an explosive return to the universe and characters of his classic crime film—with an all-new story unfolding in the years before and after the iconic movie

One day after the end of Heat, Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer) is holed up in Koreatown, wounded, half delirious, and desperately trying to escape LA. Hunting him is LAPD detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino). Hours earlier, Hanna killed Shiherlis’s brother in arms Neil McCauley (De Niro) in a gunfight under the strobe lights at the foot of an LAX runway. Now Hanna’s determined to capture or kill Shiherlis, the last survivor of McCauley’s crew, before he ghosts out of the city.

In 1988, seven years earlier, McCauley, Shiherlis, and their highline crew are taking scores on the West Coast, the US-Mexican border, and now in Chicago. Driven, daring, they’re pulling in money and living vivid lives. And Chicago homicide detective Vincent Hanna—a man unreconciled with his history—is following his calling, the pursuit of armed and dangerous men into the dark and wild places, hunting an ultraviolent gang of home invaders.

Meanwhile, the fallout from McCauley’s scores and Hanna’s pursuit cause unexpected repercussions in a parallel narrative, driving through the years following Heat.

Heat 2 projects its dimensional and richly drawn men and women into whole new worlds—from the inner sanctums of rival crime syndicates in a South American free-trade zone to transnational criminal enterprises in Southeast Asia. The novel brings you intimately into these lives. In Michael Mann’s Heat universe, they will confront new adversaries in lethal circumstances beyond all boundaries.

Heat 2 is engrossing, moving, and tragic—a masterpiece of crime fiction with the same extraordinary ambitions, scope, and rich characterizations as the epic film.

This book was filled action and well written chapters, if you are a Heat fan it will not disappoint. Also the length provides some real value for the money.

Great book

I was a little concerned that, based on reviews I'd read and also with the sample I'd heard, the narrator would ruin the book for me. Someone had said it is read in Lego Batman voice, which is funny, and also not entirely untrue. That being said, I personally enjoyed the narrator quite a bit, and very much enjoyed the story. I am a big fan of the film, and getting the back story of the characters and after story of Vincent Hanna and Chris Sheherlis was really satisfying. The narrator does a good job with the voices, and does a pretty good Al Pacino. I felt carried along both with the inner worlds of the characters, as well as with the action and suspense. Probably gonna give it a 2nd listen, not ready to leave the world and characters behind just yet. Recommended.

Experience the crew and cops from before plus meet new ones. It's fantastic.

The narrators voice was originally a little too gruff for me. But, I cane to appreciate it. His VA of Det. Hanna is pretty good without being over the top.

Having a chance to experience what came after the ending of Heat (1995) and to delve deeper into the only survivng member of the Neil's crew, to get so much more from his perspective.

This book is long. And Brutal. And I ate up ever second of it.

Ended up so attached and enthralled by all that's going on, the ending credits took me by surprise!

I wanted more. I wanted to see this become a series of books.

Highly recommended if you enjoyed Heat, the film.

Hot All the Way Through!

Because of this reading, I can’t WAIT for this movie succession! The short sentencing kept me on the edge of my seat chapter for chapter. You feels Mann’s grip on this work all the way through the saga! It’s very well done and cooperatively well done by these two authors! So decadently descriptive and d full of passion in its connection of flashbacks and current storylines! Loved the way they traversed it internationally as well as domestically. The romance introduced is extremely hot, sizzling and complicated! The voice changes for the characters are riveting for one male to produce and sensitive to each particular character. Again, I can’t wait for the movie, series and or follow ups to come because “Heat 2” is HOT all the way through!! Thank You for the most exciting fiction I’ve experienced this year!!

I kept listening.

What some other reviewers are saying is true. The narrator (at least initially) affects an almost farcical “hard boiled” voice that is pretty hard to get used to.
What saved it for me, and actually made it entertaining, was his rendering of the character of Hannah (played in the original film by Al Pacino).
The narrator does a great Al Pacino impression, mimicking that actor’s bombastic line delivery and nailing it.
The story itself was by turns action-packed, suspenseful, and intriguing. It held my interest and had me wondering was going to happen next.

Narrator actually kind of rocks!

Ignore all those negative nancies complaining about the narrator - they’re wrong. This is definitely the narrator you want for this kind of story and style, especially when he does Hanna’s dialogue.

Would give 7 stars if I could

Excellent book, great characters, really gives life to the already fairly deep characters in Heat.

Pulse Hammering

What a ride. I want Mann to work on more stories this way that he wasn't able to bring to film or series.

Picks up at the right spot and keeps moving. The shadowing back and forth over time paints a great picture of HEAT prelog
