No electricity, no family, no connection to the outside world. For eight years, Cooper and his young daughter, Finch, have lived in isolation in a remote cabin in the northern Appalachian woods. And that's exactly the way Cooper wants it, because he's got a lot to hide. Finch has been raised on the books filling the cabin’s shelves and the beautiful but brutal code of life in the wilderness. But she’s starting to push back against the sheltered life Cooper has created for her - and he’s still haunted by the painful truth of what it took to get them there.

In the late 1960s, riding the crest of the counterculture movement, Cea's family left a comfortable existence in California to live off the land in the Canadian wilderness. But unlike most commune dwellers of the time, the Persons weren't trying to build a new society - they wanted to escape civilization altogether. Led by Cea's grandfather Dick, they lived a pot-smoking, free-loving, clothing-optional life under a canvas tipi without running water, electricity, or heat for the bitter winters.

Story
The police in Jersey County, Illinois, accepted Paula Sims' story of a masked kidnapper who snatched her baby girl, Lorelei, from her bassinet. Three years later, her second newborn daughter suffered an identical fate - and this time the police were unable to stop searching until they had discovered the whole horrifying truth. This is the full terrifying story of twisted sexuality and hate seething below the surface of a seemingly normal family and of the massive investigation and nerve-shattering trial that made the unthinkable a reality.

Publisher's summary
Twins David and Dennis Pischke's lives change forever when their father dies and a man damaged by the war arrives at their farm near the isolated town of Moosehorn, Manitoba. Boleslaw Domko quickly works his way into their lives and their mother's bed.
Where Children Run opens with one of their earliest memories - the day Domko throws their infant stepsister against the wall. In this firsthand account, the twins recall years of neglect, starvation, and enslavement; horrific beatings and candlelit nights spent in the nearby St. Thomas Lutheran Church. Neighbors intervene, but their efforts provide only temporary relief as the children's mother - also living in fear - refuses to press charges.
The brothers vow that if they survive, they will someday expose their tormentor and members of their mother's religious organization who turned a blind eye to their suffering. This is their story - told with stark honesty and in heart-wrenching detail.
Where Children Run is a timeless, unforgettable audiobook about survival, a powerful testament to the strength and adaptability of the human spirit.
Contains mature themes.

World War II has just ended when Mikhail finds a dying man and his German shepherd, Zasha, in the woods. It’s dangerous — some say traitorous — to own a German dog after Germany attacked Russia, so Mikhail must keep Zasha a secret to keep her alive. Story
The death of a teenage Amish girl in a cornfield looks like an accident, but sheriff Serenity Adams suspects foul play. To solve the murder, she must investigate the nearby Amish community with the help of a man who was shunned years ago. At first glance, the case seems obvious. The poor girl was probably accidently shot during hunting season, but when the elders of the Amish community and even the girl's parents react with uncaring subdued behavior, Serenity becomes suspicious.

Inside a beautiful house in Philadelphia's ritzy Main Line section lay the body of a young mother - dead of an apparent drowning in her bathtub. With no sign of a break-in, no history of marital problems, and the naïve belief that these things sometimes just happen, Stefanie Rabinowitz's family prepared to bury the 29-year-old wife and mother. But at the 11th hour, because Stefanie was so young, and because there were no witnesses to her death, an autopsy was ordered. And what it revealed was unthinkable: Stefanie had been murdered.

The souls of the twins stayed STRONG.
It is always sad to hear about people, especially children, being tortured. This factual story is difficult to listen to, I feel that the knowledge this stuff happened, and is still happening, is something we all need. We can't hide from it, nor should we. We need to be aware of it, so that we can help those that suffer from physical, mental and emotional abuse.
This book was wonderfully written.
I appreciate the author's note. It was definitely a plus to hear how the family got on after the horrible things they endured.

Heartbreaking reality
What a wonderful and heartbreaking story of strength and suffering. I cried and I laughed and then I cried some more. A Very sobering history that makes me appreciate what I have.

Heartbreaking
This story is very well written. I don’t know how children survive such abuse. The mother is almost as bad as her husband for allowing this to continue. Escape from the stepfather was impossible. Authorities were of no help, which led to more torture and pain. Thank God the children survived and moved on to a normal life, but not without scares and nightmares. Definitely will keep you wanting to hear more. I had cried and laughed with this amazing story, and can’t believe this actually happens to families. God bless the children.

A Horrific childhood so clearly pictured.
I am amazed the horrible and incredibly sad childhood can actually be so clearly written that it is like I watched a movie. It's so sad that children deal with this day after day. Definitely makes you want to be more aware so you don't overlook those who could be going through this.

Good book- little long
My only issues with the book was the graphic description of animal abuse. It’s hard for me stomach such, the book gave graphic details of it so I fast forward those sections. Everything else was perfectly told.

Brutal story, but necessary to avoid these issues in the future.
The reader has a nice voice and reads well. The story is extremely harsh and turned my stomach in many of the recollections but it's so important that we listen and understand that abuse cases like this exist or we cannot stop this from happening again. It's so rewarding to know that the kids survived and did not perpetuate abuse on their own children. I recommend this book if you care about helping abused families and animals.
