The legend of the foundation of Rome by Romulus in 753BC accords very well with the earliest defensive walls on the Palatine Hill, made of clay and timber and showing evidence of animal sacrifices. To trace the continual efforts to fortify Rome is to trace the rise and fall of the Roman Empire - through the taking of the city by the Gauls in 390/387, the wars with the Italian states, the threat of Hannibal, the establishment of the Republic, attacks by the northern tribes and eventual division and collapse.

Or was it a carefully regulated culture in which the uncontrollable excess of laughter was a force to fear-a world of wit, irony, and knowing smiles? How did Romans make sense of laughter? What role did it play in the world of the law courts, the imperial palace, or the spectacles of the arena?

His small tarnished coin, then, actually told the epic story of Rome.

Christian writers and historians have seen Julian much differently: as a traitor to God and violent oppressor of Christians.

Story
Paul was a Roman. Yes, the apostle was raised as a devout Jew and later became a Christian, but he was a citizen of the Roman Empire. He lived in a Roman world. In his Epistle to the Ephesians, Paul wrote to an audience of Christians living in a Roman world, under Roman rule. They had all seen Roman legionnaires and were familiar with the armor and weapons carried by a typical Roman soldier. As contemporary Christians, we have a tendency to picture Sir Lancelot on his horse. We are using the wrong imagery. We miss the powerful symbolism of Paul's analogy.

Living in ancient Rome was one of the most intense experiences in human history. It was also superbly and vividly recorded by Rome's historians and poets who were acutely aware of the seething and voluptuous nature of a city that ruled the known world. Populus takes the listener into a world of violent politics, disorder, unspeakably brutal entertainments, extravagance, decadence, eroticism, exotica, and staggering inequality, participated in daily by the Roman people from the hyper-rich elite to the lowliest slaves.

Story
The first Christians were weird. Just how weird is often lost on today's believers. Within Roman society, the earliest Christians stood out for the oddness of their beliefs and practices. They practiced a whole new way of thinking about and doing religion that would have been seen as bizarre and dangerous when compared to Roman religion and most other religions of the ancient world.

Story
Among all the early Iron Age people from the Near East who inherited the geopolitical vacuum of power left by the Sea Peoples invasions, the Phrygians are perhaps one of the most misunderstood. They built a powerful and wealthy kingdom, but were overshadowed by their more powerful and wealthier neighbors, the Lydians.
