Historia
In this stunning work of historical fiction, Laila Lalami brings us the imagined memoirs of the first black explorer of America--a Moroccan slave whose testimony was left out of the official record. In 1527 the conquistador Pnfilo de Narvez sailed from the port of Sanlcar de Barrameda with a crew of 600 men and nearly a hundred horses. His goal was to claim what is now the Gulf Coast of the United States for the Spanish crown and, in the process, become as wealthy and famous as Hernn Corts.

It was a moment unique in human history: the face-to-face meeting between two men from civilizations a world apart. In 1519, Hernán Cortés arrived on the shores of Mexico, determined not only to expand the Spanish empire but to convert the natives to Catholicism and carry off a fortune in gold. That he saw nothing paradoxical in his intentions is one of the most remarkable and tragic aspects of this unforgettable story.

Resumen del Editor
Gary Jennings' exciting sequel to his best selling Aztec, vividly recreates a forgotten chapter of history. One generation after his people were brutally conquered and forced into subordination by the Spaniards, a proud young Aztec named Tenamáxtli courageously refuses to bow to his foreign rulers. Instead, driven by his dream to rebuild the Aztec Empire, Tenamáxtli secretly recruits an army to fight the seemingly invincible Spanish forces. Along the way he finds high adventure, passionate women, unlikely allies, and moments of genuine hope and bitter tragedy.

As destiny weaves its rich tapestry, a compelling drama plays out against a background of wild forests, elegant castles, hidden temples, and savage battlefields. This is the medieval Japan of Lian Hearn's imagination, where animal spirits clash with warriors and children navigate a landscape as serene as it is deadly.

From a single riverside village situated at one of the country’s geographic crossroads, Russia’s Slav peasant origins are influenced by the Greco-Iranian, Khazar, Jewish, and Mongol invasions. Unified by this one place, the many cultures blend to form a rich and varied tapestry. Rutherfurd’s grand saga is as multifaceted as Russia itself.

In this Edgar Award-nominated mystery, John Maddox Roberts takes listeners back to a Rome filled with violence and evil. Vicious gangs ruled the streets of Crassus and Pompey, routinely preying on plebeian and patrician alike. So the garroting of a lowly ex-slave and the disembowelment of a foreign merchant in the dangerous Subura district seemed of little consequence to the Roman hierarchy.

Alexander's beauty, strength and defiance were apparent from birth, but his boyhood honed those gifts into the makings of a king. His mother, Olympias, and his father, King Philip of Macedon, fought each other for their son's loyalty, teaching Alexander politics and vengeance from the cradle. His love for the youth Hephaistion taught him trust, while Aristotle's tutoring provoked his mind and Homer's Iliad fuelled his aspirations.

In 1519, the Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortés first met Montezuma, the Aztec emperor, at the entrance to the capital city of Tenochtitlan. This introduction - the prelude to the Spanish seizure of Mexico City and to European colonization of the mainland of the Americas - has long been the symbol of Cortés' bold and brilliant military genius. Montezuma, on the other hand, is remembered as a coward who gave away a vast empire and touched off a wave of colonial invasions across the hemisphere. But is this really what happened?

I read some negative reviews on here and was a little concerned. I read the first book twice and wanted to enjoy this one as well.

Not nearly as good as Aztec
I am a big Gary Jennings fan. Aztec and the Journeyer are 2 of my all time favorites. I just felt that this book fell short of getting you to identify with and connect with the characters. Maybe it was the difference, between the reading and listening, or even comparing it with Aztec, but I just didn’t really love this one. I still think that the creative writing was incredible and the way Gary brings images to life is great.

The story is a great historical fiction novel. The reader did outstanding job with difficult words. I hope Audible will produce his other three stories about Aztec. I own all his books in hard back. Just never got to read other then the first one.

Wrong Narrator
How in the world can you defend choosing a so obviously caucasian narrator to tell the first-person story of a South American indigene?!! You mean to tell me there is no Indian or Latino male competent enough to narrate this book?
