Resumen del Editor

A novel of the devout young woman who became the unwilling object of King Henry VIII's ardor - and the mother of his only son.

In this third book in the epic Six Tudor Queens series, the acclaimed historian and best-selling author brings new insight to this dramatic story, showing how pure fear for her life determined Jane Seymour's actions.

Twenty-five-year-old Jane Seymour wants nothing more than to become a nun. But her ambitious father has forced her to live at court as lady-in-waiting to Queen Katherine of Aragon, a fellow Catholic whom she soon comes to love and admire. So Jane is appalled when King Henry shunts Katherine aside in his lustful pursuit of Anne Boleyn, but even more so when he takes Anne's life in his rush to wed - Jane herself!

Unwilling to marry but terrified to resist Henry's advances for fear she might share Anne's fate, and propelled by her family, Jane becomes queen of England a mere 10 days after Anne's execution. She knows she must produce a male heir without fail. Her very life depends on it.

Fun fictionalization of a lesser-known story

I enjoyed the novel theories, especially as explained in the author's note. Good narrator. Recommend.

Possibly the best of the series.

Ann of Cleves will be my next book. I have listened to the rest. I didn’t expect much from a book on Jane Seymour. I was wrong. The author created an outstanding novel, anchored by a reasonable amount of factual material. There was something about this audible that brought out some humanity in a vicious world.

Most surprising, it changed my view of King Henry. I can now understand that discarding of his wives, was not some maniacal out of control man, but rather, a real need to have a male heir. Not having one not only mean’t the end of his dynasty, but a much greater chance of civil war. Once a wife was past the age of having children, he needed to discard her, for the sake of his country. Katherine, the true queen, failed to understand this. It was she who was in the wrong. She would rather risk civil war, than give up her title. That came to pass, with the Mary Queen of Scott’s saga. That never would have happened if Henry had a healthy male heir to run the country.

blown away

jane is by far my least favorite of the sixth wives, I know she is typically seen as the good one but it never sat right with me that she happily took the role of queen when Anne's body wasn't even cold yet. I like that this book doesn't paint her as the good queen and gives into her flaws. Even though this is fiction I did find myself having a better liking for Jane than when I first started on the series.

Jane Seymour so human, so beloved and now so real.

I have read many books on the Tudor era and have always found that Jane Seymour has the smallest chapter. This is much dramatized novel however is it definitely spot on when it comes to historical fact.

It takes us from the reign of Katherine of Aragon through the tumultuous reign of Ann Boleyn. With each chapter Alison Weir introduces more facets of Jane's personality. I have, in the past, thought of Jane as a weak and spineless individual whom I am sure that if she had lived would have been put aside just like Henry's previous wives when he sees someone else who takes his fancy. After reading this I have had reason to change my mind. She may have been perceived as week but she was brave, loyal and persistent with a genuine love of people. It is little wonder that she was so accepted by the British people.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and of course having the great Rosalyn Landor as narrator made this totally engrossing from the first paragraph. A great listen and highly recommended.
