Archaeologist Eliana Fisk is ripped from Earth while the whole world watches. She lands on a strange new world inhabited by a lost tribe of ancient Mayans. Meeting them, getting firsthand exposure to age-old customs and rituals...it seems like an archaeologist’s dream. But what if their rituals have a darker meaning? What if the god these people pray to is no god at all? And how in the world will she ever get back home?

Jordan McKell has a problem with authority. Unfortunately for him, the iron-fisted authority of the powerful Patthaaunutth controls virtually every aspect of galactic shipping. The galaxy was once terrorized by the Sturm, a group of “species purists” intent on destroying any human with genetic or cybernetic enhancements. Fashioning themselves as the one true “Human Republic,” the Sturm cut a bloody swath across the stars, killing billions before finally being defeated and driven into the far reaches of Dark Space. Centuries of peace bred complacency. Everyone believed the Sturm had died out in the Dark. They were wrong.

Young executive Connell Kirkland is the company’s driving force, pushing himself and those around him to uncover the massive treasure. Low-level entertainment lawyer Nick Carter thinks it's a prank, not an alien encounter, when a redheaded mullah and a curvaceous nun show up at his office. But Frampton and Carly are highly advanced (if bumbling) extraterrestrials. And boy, do they have news. The entire cosmos, they tell him, has been hopelessly hooked on humanity's music ever since "Year Zero" (1977 to us), when American pop songs first reached alien ears. This addiction has driven a vast intergalactic society to commit the biggest copyright violation since the Big Bang.

On June 30, 1908, an object fell from the sky, releasing more energy than a thousand Hiroshima bombs. A Siberian forest was flattened, but the strike left no significant crater. The anomaly came to be known as the Tunguska Event, and scientists have never agreed whether it was the largest meteor strike in recorded history - or something else. Alien artifacts have been uncovered since the 1908 event, and a new star drive is discovered.

interesting science, silly story
The strength of this book is the depiction of what a Mars colony might looks like. The narrator is good. The story itself, however, is so improbable that it takes away from the reliability of the science. The deeper into the story the book goes the sillier it gets.

Red Mars meets Artemis
Loved this novel as much as Cawdron's first that I discovered (Occupied States of America). Good science behind this very human story. The novel jumps right into the disaster on Earth and how the Martian colonists handle it. Fabulous five stars.

Entertaining but not amazing
3-1/2 stars: If you are hoping this will be another “The Martian”, let go of that expectation. While it may have a loosely similar premise, it is definitely NOT the same (nor was I expecting it to be). Overall this was an enjoyable science fiction thriller novel. The audiobook was very well narrated by Sarah Mollo-Christiansen who did a great job with the different voices and accents. The twist in the story was different than the one I had anticipated (I’m not giving any details on that) and took the story down a different path (which is not necessarily a bad thing and quite possibly better than what I had expected). However, some parts about Mars were a little too filled with science details and I found my mind wandering off a bit at times while I listened. (The details weren’t quite as interesting or entertaining as those I read about in “The Martian”, or maybe it was just the method with which they were given.) While I enjoyed the book, I didn’t feel the anticipation and excitement or camaraderie between characters that I had hoped to feel while reading it. It was entertaining but didn’t wow me. I’m not sorry I read it or that I spent an Audible credit on it, as it was an enjoyable read/listen. It just wasn’t amazing.

Hard to listen to
I enjoyed the story, but the narration was robotic. It is like every sentence is read as a bullet point. I listened at an increased speed to get through the plethora of pregnant pauses.
