Ma presto si accorge di quanto siano orribili i rapporti tra marito e moglie, fatti di bugie e tradimenti. Quando poi Takada le dichiara il proprio amore, Eiko parte per Tahiti: vuole stare sola e capire cosa fare della sua vita.
Da una storia apparentemente semplice si snodano, in tutta la loro profondità, alcuni temi che disegnano la filigrana di una narrazione nitida ed elegante: la difficoltà di coltivare un amore sulle macerie del dolore o del tradimento, la forza di costruire una nuova identità senza abbandonarsi alla precarietà degli incontri, la possibilità di custodire il ricordo dei morti senza farsi sommergere dalla loro assenza, la capacità di attingere dalla natura l'energia per ritrovare se stessi.
