Publisher's summary

When young, penniless Bellarion finds himself thrust into a murderous intrigue, his sharp wit and scholarly background allow him to see things invisible to others.

Set in 15th century Italy, and cast with a rogues’ gallery of colorful villains, Bellarion adroitly navigates the complicated world of dukes, counts, and countesses to rise to unusual prominence and serve a purpose all his own.

Rafael Sabatini (1875-1950) was an Italian-English novelist and a short story writer. He produced over thirty novels, six nonfiction books, eight collections of short stories and various uncollected short stories.

twists and turns in renaissance Italy

This is one of my favorite Sabatini novels as the hero does not so much swashbuckle his way throught the pages as outthink the people he meets. As the setting is Italy in the 1400s, Bellarion's nuanced plans are perceived as selfish schemes by many. And the plot goes n ....
I gave the narrator five stars possibly because I loathed John Bolen's reading of Sabatini's "Sea Hawk" so much that I deleted it after half an hour. That was the most abysmal narration I have ever had the displeasure of hearing. But JB Harrison's reading of this book was a pleasure to hear.

A Landlocked Captain Blood

Extraordinarily talented protagonist, misunderstood by the girl, conquers his enemies and eventually her heart. Same plot as the author's Captain Blood, perhaps a little less realistic, despite major roles for historical figures, but a great listen nonetheless.

The narration is excellent, and combined with Sabatini's facility with language and a twisty, battle-filled plot makes this an enjoyable 16-hour romp through 15-century Italy.
