A race against time becomes a battle for the soul in this suspenseful story from New York Times best seller Jeffery Deaver.
Death is a topic Bradford Douglas is intimately familiar with. The young attorney is on a crusade against capital punishment. He’s saved a number of death row inmates, but none of his cases has been as tough as the one he now faces: Henry Combs, a vicious serial killer, has only hours to live when Douglas is summoned for a Hail Mary attempt to have the man’s sentence commuted to life imprisonment.
As Douglas races to pursue whatever strategies he can think of, he finds his passion for justice giving way to something altogether different.

Story
A serial kidnapper is on the loose in a small town in Maine, targeting wealthy women and demanding a huge ransom in bitcoin for their safe return. When his latest victim’s husband claims that he can’t come up with the money, the word “deadline” takes on a disturbingly literal meaning. The local police are out of their depth, but Colter Shaw takes the lead in the investigation. Soon, he’s using his survivalist instincts to uncover clues and pursue suspects, putting his own life on the line to catch the would-be killer before the countdown hits zero.

On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

What brought on the bad dream was, of all things, an old-time Buick. Sam Fogel wasn’t into vehicles, certainly not collectibles. The forty-two-year-old college professor leaned more toward chamber music and theater and poetry as diversions, not expensive, environment-wrecking technology. But over breakfast one spring Saturday, Janie looked up from the Meadow Hills Observer and pointed to an article, suggesting that he take the children to the fairgrounds to see the auto show.

Interesting concept but makes no sense
Okay, stop reading this if you haven’t read the book yet, because I can’t write this review without spoilers. One of the important rules of writing is: hiding the gun. That means you have to show your audience little hints of what is to come. You can’t just turn a person who dedicates his life to preventing the death penalty into a serial killer without any premise. You need to show how his mind is changed, how he slips into that darkness. In all honesty the ending of this book is total BS. The author wanted to do something unexpected, but even the unexpected needs to fit the story. I felt utterly cheated by the abrupt turn around. The writing was okay, not brilliant, and the characters were a little weak. Not great but the concept gives it an extra star from me (it would have been 2 stars otherwise)

Had to give a half rate as I’d only half finished the book before falling asleep for the night. Narrator read on like a champ and finished the book apparently. Now in order to finish listening it seems Audible demands this review. Love Deaver’s writing but to be fair, I’m only halfway in.

Great Short Story
I'm a big fan of Jeffery Deaver and have read several of his books, and a lot of his short stories. This short story was great and the end will certainly throw you for a loop. David Harbour was excellent with the narrating. I received this from the audible plus catalogue.

Let me start by saying I don’t typically write a review for anything. I’m making this exception due to my utter delight with this short story.
I am a voracious reader, and have been for 45 years. It’s not easy to surprise me anymore, but Denver does it with this one.
