Publisher's summary

The best-selling novel featuring the "wonderfully epic hero" (People) who inspired the hit film Jack Reacher.

Thumbing across the scorched West Texas desert, loner Jack Reacher has nowhere to go and all the time in the world to get there. Cruising the same stretch of two-lane blacktop is pretty Carmen Greer. But for Reacher, the lift comes with a hitch. Carmen's got a story to tell, and it's a wild one. All about her husband, her family secrets, and a hometown that's pure Gothic. She's also got a plan. Jack Reacher's part of it. And before the sun sets, this ride could cost them both their lives.

Critic reviews

"Smashingly suspenseful...The kind of daylight-noir setting that Jim Thompson loved. Child builds tension to unbearable extremes.” (Kirkus Reviews [starred review])

“An explosive nail-biting climax.” (Library Journal)

Really tense one. Enjoyed the detective work.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

If the finale was described a little better. I felt like there wasnt the best description of the area.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes. The lies and reveals of a certain character over and over again REALLY kept me curious.

What about Dick Hill’s performance did you like?

I prefer McClane as Reacher. Dick Hill sounds older. He doesnt sound cocky or angry enough.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Absolutely.

Any additional comments?

This one was good. Not the best and certainly not the worst. A great addition.

trying to be a fan

This book is not as good as 2 3 or 4. a big part of the problem is the reader. I stop lessons to it after chapter 3. that being said I loved books 2 3 and 4. Started 6 hoping its better

Child puts you right next to the characters

Dick Hill is an amazing narrator. I could, and have, listened to him all day.

Carmen

it was a good read, believable characters and a good pace. Reacher missed the clue, I got it the second time I heard the book.

Love this series.

I really enjoy the writing style and find Reacher's deductive process to be unique and refreshing.
I like Dick Hill as the narrator, although, I sometimes wish he was a little better at doing female voice. Regardless of his skill level with female voices, I can always tell when the characters are switching. No complaints there.
I look forward to the rest of the books. :)

Great story, not so great narration.

Love the Reacher novels, can't stand Dick Hill's annoying voices narrating them. It would be refreshing to find some novels narrated by someone else.

Another Great One

Great book. I disagree with other reviews that said it moved slow. I thought the pace was perfect given the plot. And yes, you do hear ‘he said nothing’ a lot but it fits and wasn’t a bother to me.

Narrator was excellent. Handled the different characters voices well, including the little girl.

Already downloaded the next book in the series and can’t wait to start it.

Not the best Jack Reacher - one time listen only.

Would you try another book from Lee Child and/or Dick Hill?

I love the series. The BEST of the series is either Killing Floor or Bad Luck and Trouble. This title is not great. The story isn't bad, the performance was very good because Dick Hill is almost always good but as a whole the book fails to grab me by the lapel and shake me like better ones from the series do. It is worth listening to once (unlike the books 2,3,4 done by Johnathan McClain which are totally brutal and mutilated by the performance).

Would you be willing to try another book from Lee Child? Why or why not?

Yes, I love Lee Child with Dick Hill reading.

Which character – as performed by Dick Hill – was your favorite?

Reacher - always.

Mostly good, marred by bad narration for female characters

Typical Reacher fare; if you like the others this will work for you. However, I found the narration for the two lead adult females annoying enough to drive me to write my first review.
