Publisher's summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of In Five Years and One Italian Summer comes a love story that will define a generation.

Being single is like playing the lottery. There’s always the chance that with one piece of paper you could win it all.

Daphne Bell believes the universe has a plan for her. Every time she meets a new man, she receives a slip of paper with his name and a number on it—the exact amount of time they will be together. The papers told her she’d spend three days with Martin in Paris; five weeks with Noah in San Francisco; and three months with Hugo, her ex-boyfriend turned best friend. Daphne has been receiving the numbered papers for over twenty years, always wondering when there might be one without an expiration. Finally, the night of a blind date at her favorite Los Angeles restaurant, there’s only a name: Jake.

But as Jake and Daphne’s story unfolds, Daphne finds herself doubting the paper’s prediction, and wrestling with what it means to be both committed and truthful. Because Daphne knows things Jake doesn’t, information that—if he found out—would break his heart.

Told with her signature warmth and insight into matters of the heart, Rebecca Serle has finally set her sights on romantic love. The result is a gripping, emotional, passionate, and (yes) heartbreaking novel about what it means to be single, what it means to find love, and ultimately how we define each of them for ourselves. Expiration Dates is the one fans have been waiting for.

Fresh Storyline

A romance that felt new…I had no idea how it would end! The flashbacks were effective.

Evelyn Hugo Meets The Measure

This book was thoroughly entertaining! It's like a mash up of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and The Measure in regards to dating. The storytelling is stellar as it waltzes between the past and present.

Didn’t relate at all

Normally I love Julia as a narrator, I seek out titles she narrates - but this was not one I’d recommend. The narration of Daphne was so monotone that I couldn’t stand the main character. She seemed like everything and everyone was just “meh.” I think Julia did a great job with every other character but the main one was just not great. I am almost done with this book and mostly can’t wait for it to be over, but also holding on to a glimmer of hope I may like the ending and find a way to like Daphne after all. Also holding out hope there’s some explanation to these papers she receives because until now I’m unsure why this has never been actually discussed - as if it’s normal.

Not over the top w excitement, but still a good read

Not over the top with w excitement but still a good read/listen. The way she describes her dog is exactly how I feel about mine.

I picked this book because of Julia Whelan being the narrator.

You can never go wrong when Julia is narrating. But perhaps it introduced me to Rebecca Serle and now I love her writing style and good story telling. Can’t wait to read more of her.

Beautiful and moving

Started a little slowly but kept my interest. And I’m so glad it did. This was a beautiful surprise and one of her best books yet.

Loved it

Great story line that reminded me somewhat of The Measure. Julia’s performance never misses. Would recommend this to anyone.

The overall premise

Plot, characters were not fully explained or developed. Somewhat interesting but not completely engaging- narrator kept my attention, however.
