Story
As Adolf Hitler and the Nazis seduced a nation, bullied a continent, and attempted to exterminate the Jews of Europe, a small number of dissidents and saboteurs worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the inside. One of these was Dietrich Bonhoeffer. In the first major biography of Bonhoeffer in 40 years, New York Times best-selling author Eric Metaxas takes both strands of Bonhoeffer's life - the theologian and the spy - to tell a searing story of incredible moral courage in the face of monstrous evil.

What is his will for us today? Drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, Dietrich Bonhoeffer answers these timeless questions by providing a seminal reading of the dichotomy between "cheap grace" and "costly grace."

God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn’t working harder at a list of do's and don'ts - it's falling in love with God.

Story
Turning the other cheek does not mean standing by while the enemies of God dismantle Christian civilization and brainwash our children. Decrying the cowardice that masquerades as meekness, Eric Metaxas summons the Church to battle. An attenuated and unbiblical “faith” based on what Bonhoeffer called “cheap grace” has sapped the spiritual vitality of millions of Americans. Paying lip service to an insipid “evangelism,” they shrink from combating the evils of our time. Metaxas refutes the pernicious lie that fighting evil politicizes Christianity.

Millions are satisfied to sit through hour-long, weekly religious services. Millions more have left the church, brokenhearted and cynical. But God is waking up his people - people who will risk everything and sacrifice anything to become the dynamic, powerful church seen in Scripture. We Are Church calls Christ-followers, young and old, to hold fast to their biblical roots while seeking radical change. Scripture promises an exuberant and unstoppable church. That wondrous early church of acts can be our reality today.

Publisher's summary
Now, in Life Together, we have Pastor Bonhoeffer's experience of Christian community. This story of a unique fellowship in an underground seminary during the Nazi years reads like one of Paul's letters. It gives practical advice on how life together in Christ can be sustained in families and groups.
The role of personal prayer, worship in common, everyday work, and Christian service is treated in simple, almost biblical, words. Life Together is bread for all who are hungry for the real life of Christian fellowship.

To know Him in His pleasures is to see Him as He is - and to have a fresh encounter with His transforming presence. If you are hungry for this deep delight, consider the gladness of His great heart. The things that make God glad are the measures of His greatness. Christ and the cross. Choosing His people and bruising His Son. Creating the world and revealing His worth. The Puritans, as a body, have done more to elevate the national character than any class of Englishmen that ever lived. Ardent lovers of civil liberty, and ready to die in its defense - mighty at the council board, and no less mighty in the battlefield - feared abroad throughout Europe, and invincible at home while united - great with their pens, and no less great with their swords - fearing God very much, and fearing men very little - they were a generation of men who have never received from their country the honor that they deserve.

Some great thoughts from an inspiring Christian
Some interesting and simple thoughts by Bonhoeffer. There were some good nuggets in this short book about alien righteousness, the Psalms and how in them we find the praying Christ, and meditation. This work has really encouraged me to start again a morning devotional/time set a part for reading the word, singing, and prayer. He also had some interesting thoughts on singing and the idea of unity singing as a congregation. I fully agreed with him on the idea that our singing can turn into a work of self glorifying (my term) of sorts and that if we simply sing in unity it can be a form of corporate prayer.
I'll have to read this one again, maybe next year, to get more out of it as simple as it was. There were also some very good ideas for evening devotionals as a family.

Uplifting and Intelligent
Considering the time period in which Life Together was written, I was surprised by the positve and life affirming attitude of the writer. Moreover I found myself agreeing whole heartedly with his arguments for community and oneness. Bonhoefer's position is a strong affirmation of Christan ethics , beliefs, and the responsibility of each and evvery one of us to do that which is right in the sight if God. tg

Excellent
Everything good, but sections on Psalms, corporate life together and confession especially helpful. The desperate need for The Church (Christians, starting with myself) to prayerfully meditate on this material in our current/post-enlightenment/radically individual milieu is probably hard to measure. I just started Myles Werntz’ recent “From Isolation to Community” and his use of Bonhoeffer (among others) to assist in diagnosing and addressing isolation seems a great companion to Life Together.
