Publisher's summary

When her fiancé, Giles Armitage, is lost at sea in the middle of the Second World War, Meade Underwood is left in the company of a middle-aged aunt with nothing but a monotonous round of bridge parties and war work to fill her days. A chance encounter restores Giles to Meade but he has lost his memory, and their rediscovered happiness is threatened by the machinations of the scheming Carola Roland, a figure from Giles' forgotten past. So when Carola is viciously murdered, Giles becomes the chief suspect and it takes all Miss Silver's ingenuity to unravel the real significance of the crime and its electrifying consequences.

Good old fashioned mystery

Interesting story & was not super dark and no violence or sex. Just a “nice” old fashioned mystery

Miss Marple on Steroids

I am working my way thru the Miss Silver series. Enjoying it for the most part. Miss Marple but with attitude and ambition! Expects to get paid for her detective work. A bit formulaic but still enjoyable. Some insipid characters, but I guess that reflects real life! And the occasional time when I want to say, Oh come on! It is not him, it is his brother, wife, son, daughter etc etc.

I call this type of book, mind candy, passes the time but you don't have to think too hard!

Deja vue

Many elements similar to other stories by PW - male romantic lead with amnesia, blackmail, even some descriptive phrases recycled, but overall still entertaining with a satisfying end.

Good writing style, okay story

The mystery was complex enough, but it took more than half the book to slowly set up a host of uninteresting characters. Some character storylines eventually became interesting but not taken to enough depth to make it a page turner. Once Miss Silver got involved late in the book, it picked up. However, overall, I found it a confusing jumble of people with some confusing scene and point of view shifts. The author is creative and talented, and I appreciate that she doesn’t tell the story inside people’s heads as so many writers these days do. However, since I didn’t get hooked until late in the story, and if this is the author’s typical formula, future purchases might not be worth the cost of a credit. But if I find others on sale, I’d probably give her another try.

A favorite Patricia Wentworth title

Miss Silver's themes done well. Six flats in an old grand house, each full of suspects, quickly developed. Miss Silver applies the skills and knowledge of the inquisitive older woman to pick out the criminal. And, since the book was written during WW2, it is a simple reflection of war time realities--inadequate food and clothing , the dangers of an Atlantic crossing. and the realities of people being lost at sea. A good choice for a new Miss Silver reader.
