Publisher's summary

Sexual obsessions running amok, a stagnant lake full of abominable horrors, and a secluded clinic with a secret wing that no one’s ever entered. These are just a few of the goings-on in this macabre tech-horror story in which veteran novelist Edward Lee takes the mad-scientist theme into shocking new territory. Security manager Clare Prentiss swears she’s being watched during her nightly rounds on a remote federal nature preserve. Meanwhile, local hoodlums disappear without a trace, and women are dragged into woods to be raped and discarded by some unspeakable thing. Indeed, something is stalking Clare. A man? A monster? Or something significantly worse? Creepy, erotic, and gory, Monstrosity delivers up the horrors at a break-neck pace and doesn’t stop until the final minute.

All that was missing was the Scooby-Doo van

The book was pretty mild in the gore department for those who may interested into the more extreme horror books who are familiar with the author and those like him. Yet there are a few trigger words that may chase off others which makes me wonder who this book is for. The mystery is mostly irrelevant by the time it's all said and done with and I am a bit reminded of the old skin a max horror movies that you staid up until 2am for the sex scenes but failed to deliver. The idea was promising though and probably could have been better if it didn't take place within a few days. A good idea doesn't make for a good story. Even when you give a pass to the many inaccuracies (it's not that kind of book that you question real life situations)

Lacking something

The story sounds like an episode of an OK scifi TV show. It has a good plot and setting but the execution is flat. There is more dialog than action, and the narrator is just reading, not bringing the story to life.

Story was good. Narrator had no character

I struggled through it because I wanted to hear the story but the narrator used the same voice through the whole book. For example would plainly and dully say "you cant put that in there" followed by "Claire screamed". There were plenty of "adult" situations that were all completely killed by his text book style reading of them

Great story/The narrator drove me crazy

I really enjoyed the story overall! It was of course very brutal, but also intriguing and erotic.
The only thing I didn’t like was the narrator. He doesn’t change tone at all and doesn’t pause between between character perspectives. All he does is read the words in his normal talking voice. It didn’t help with feeling immersed in the story, particularly in any action scene.

Good story. Narration not very good

First off, this audiobook is a prime example of the importance of a good narrator. It can make or break a book or it can just kind of drag it down. In this case the latter is true. I really enjoyed the story. It was well written and the details were well constructed without going too far. But the narration tried to undercut the entire production. Unfortunate. But Edward Lee is a great author. So the story withstood the narration issues.

Boring boring boring

Reads like a YA Hardy Boys mystery. If it weren’t for the occasional hanky panky.
