Long-listed, Kirkus Reviews Best Books of the Year, 2023

BEING DEVELOPED AS A TV SERIES BY FOX

"The heroine of this psychological thriller is, improbably, an astrophysicist and psychic. Narrator Karissa Vacker captures Vivvy Bouchet's smarts and the urgency with which she goes after the mystery of Lizzy Solomon's disappearance."—AudioFile

“Narrator Karissa Vacker delivers a propulsive performance of Heaberlin’s latest, an intricate and layered supernatural thriller. Vacker’s characterizations are spot-on, capturing stubbornness, impulsivity, and intelligence.”—Library Journal

“An expertly rendered mystery, complete with compelling characters, an impeccably paced plot, and surprising twists...A must-read!”—Heather Gudenkauf, bestselling author of The Overnight Guest

A scientist and reluctant psychic is brought in to find a girl who went missing long ago in the new novel by Julia Heaberlin, the bestselling author of We Are All the Same in the Dark

Vivvy Bouchet, daughter of a known psychic, was ten when she saved a boy’s life by making an impossible prediction. Now she’s an astrophysicist in Texas, devoted to science, but the boy she saved has become a cop who continues to believe she can see things no one else can. When he begs for help on the high-profile cold case of a kidnapped girl, Vivvy steps back into the ocean of voices that once nearly drowned her.

She is forced to team up with detective Jesse Sharp, a skeptic of anything but fact. When Vivvy becomes the target of a conspiracy theorist podcaster, she fights back with both her scientific mind and her inexplicable gifts, hoping to lure a kidnapper, find a child who haunts her, and lay some of her own ghosts to rest.

Sharply relevant, Julia Heaberlin's Night Will Find You explores the mysterious nature of belief—in psychic power, in science, in conspiracies, in a higher power—and the delicate dance between scientific truth and the things we can’t explain.

Critic reviews

Night Will Find You is an expertly rendered mystery, complete with compelling characters, an impeccably paced plot, and surprising twists. Heaberlin writes with such aching beauty I found myself pausing to relish her words and then racing ahead because I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next. A must-read!”—Heather Gudenkauf, New York Times bestselling author of The Overnight Guest

Night Will Find You is a mesmerizing, unputdownable love letter to the mysteries of science and the human mind. With an unforgettable cast of characters—a reluctant psychic and grieving daughter, a wildly popular conspiracy theorist, a police officer with shadowy motives—Julia Heaberlin pays homage to everything we don't know about the universe and ourselves. I am already missing my time inside this world.”—Katie Gutierrez, nationally bestselling author of Good Morning America book club pick More Than You’ll Ever Know

Night Will Find You is a rare thriller that seamlessly straddles the mystic and the scientific. Compelling and compassionate, Hearberlin’s novel has one foot firmly planted in our world of misinformation and the other reaching for the inexplicable. I loved it.”—Ivy Pochoda, acclaimed author of These Women

I don’t buy it

I have really enjoyed quite a few of this author’s books. None of them are great works of literature, but I always know that going in, and I listen to them for a bit of fun. But this one really got on my nerves. The pros is beautiful, but the main character drives me nuts. It’s not that she’s an unlikable character (I usually love unlikable characters), it’s more that she just does not act like the character she is portrayed to be. she is supposed to be an astrophysicist and a confident woman, but she makes so many stupid decisions and acts like a little schoolgirl with a Crush half the time. In addition, the mystery was solved for me within the first two hours so that was a bit of a letdown. overall, my recommendation would be to pick a different book from this author. This one is more annoying than fun.

Very fun and well done

I had a great time with this listen. It kept my attention the entire time and had good pop culture references. I love bubba guns!

Heaberlin is my new favorite!

Haven’t found one of this author’s books that I wouldn’t rate at a 4.5 or 5 all around. This one was the best yet.

Really good!

Good story, good narration, believable dialogue. Regarding the reviewers unhappy with the politics in the book: it's a work of fiction - fictional characters can have liberal or conservative viewpoints that affect their arc in the story; this is not the author "inserting their politics".

Independent of her other work, it's solidly good.

If you try to compare it to We're All the Same in the Dark, you may be disappointed. That one got a solid 4.5 from me. This one, barely a 4. It's not that it wasn't good. In comparison to other books in this genre, it's a head above. It just wasn't quite as good as what I've come to expect from her. Unlike others, I didn't mind the real world references, but they do date the story and become jarring each time a reference doesn't hold up. It was a tad predictable in parts, which is bizarre, considering the subject matter being a psychic (who doesn't call herself a psychic), two missing girls, and astrophysics. The dark, mysterious, brooding, handsome but too closed-off and potentially dangerous cop with a secret about a murdered woman that he can't let go (is he a killer? Is he not?) has become an archetype in its own right, and, as expected, the protagonist finds herself attracted to him despite the element of danger he could represent to her...the secret turns out to be the easiest to predict as well as his motivations for keeping it...the "blue horse" vision turns out to be only slightly less predictable, but only in the sense that you'd have no way of guessing how it would eventually manifest. It was pretty clear from the introduction of that story line that it would manifest in a way that wasn't straightforward. All that said, it was an enjoyable read, and one that held my interest. The author's language is beautiful, her prose almost poetic at times without veering into purple prose, and the plot pacing was pretty steady. I'd recommend the read, but it's not one I'll remember for years to come or ever condider re-reading. As always, Karissa Vacker does a wonderful narrating. It was a good book...just not a great one.

Great book. Didn’t see much politics. People find reasons to get worked up. Fun story, good narration.
