Publisher's summary

Paul and the Gift changed the landscape of Pauline studies forever upon its publication in 2015. In it, John Barclay led students through a recontextualized analysis of grace and interrogated Paul’s original meaning in declaring it a “free gift” from God, revealing grace as a multifaceted concept that is socially radical and unconditioned - even if not unconditional.

Paul and the Power of Grace offers all of the most significant contributions from Paul and the Gift in a package several hundred pages lighter and more accessible. Additionally, Barclay adds further analysis of the theme of gift and grace in Paul’s other letters and explores contemporary implications for this new view of grace.

Great Supplemental Read

Great Supplemental Read to my seminary class on Galatians this quarter. Paul's gospel to the gentiles is deep in terms of exegesis. Barclay refers to Paul's description of Grace as the incongruous gift: Unbalanced, unearned, and gracious.

Great book

4.5stars. Wow. Who would have thought God would use excellent resource to give increase to a word of wisdom. The unconditional free (not cheap) gift of grace will compel one to respond. Excellent resource. The way the author spreads light on the path to what grace is and is not is just a breath of fresh living water. Highly recommend ingesting this material. Fantastic.

Immersion Broke

You’re great! But citing scriptural references made listening to this quite hard.
I could not focus.

Stop reading references!

John Barclay's work is incredibly valuable, and this work is very accessible. I'd recommend it to everyone I know. However, the audiobook reader shouldn't have read all the biblical references. Reading the references didn't contribute anything--to the contrary, it broke up Barclay's argument and made it difficult to follow or retain anything. To finish the book, I had to abandon the audio book and just read it myself.
