El amante de su madre se convierte en valido del rey y en el verdadero inspirador de su política, tanto en el interior como respecto a la Guerra de los Cien Años, que lo alejará de su aliado natural, Inglaterra, para acercarlo a Francia, llegando a pactar un matrimonio de conveniencia con Blanca, sobrina del rey de aquel país. La juventud de Pedro transcurre en medio de numerosas conquistas sexuales y continuos duelos de armas; su temperamento lo lleva a poner en riesgo su vida y a despreciar las tareas de estado.
En Rey Don Pedro el protagonismo no está en las batallas o las acciones caballerescas sino en la introspección del rey. Pedro vive una infancia con un padre ausente cuyo cariño es para sus hermanos bastardos, una juventud dominada por el odio de sus adversarios y la traición de su madre, y una madurez en la que no conoce más que algunas semanas de paz a lo largo de casi veinte años de reinado.
