The mob that stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, represented an extreme form of the central danger facing American democracy today: a blatant disregard for the will of the majority. Through voter suppression, election subversion, gerrymandering, dark money, the takeover of the courts, and the whitewashing of history, reactionary white conservatives have strategically entrenched power in the face of a massive demographic and political shift.

The 2024 election could be the last free election held in a unified America. So warns Robert Kagan in this brilliant and terrifying analysis of the perilous state of democracy in the United States today. If Donald Trump loses the upcoming election, as he did in 2020, but refuses to accept the result, as he also did in the last election, he is likely to call on his millions of followers to repudiate the election results. It will be a short step from there to Republican-dominated states rejecting the legitimacy of the federal government and effectively seceding.

Story
The relatively new judicial philosophy of textualism dominates the Supreme Court. Textualists claim that the right way to interpret the Constitution and statutes is to read the text carefully and examine the language as it was understood at the time the documents were written. This, however, is not Justice Breyer’s philosophy nor has it been the traditional way to interpret the Constitution since the time of Chief Justice John Marshall. Justice Breyer recalls Marshall’s exhortation that the Constitution must be a workable set of principles to be interpreted by subsequent generations.

From the beginning, Fani Willis saw Donald Trump’s crimes as a voting rights case, and an attempt by the former president to deprive the citizens of Georgia of the franchise, a right for which her forebears had bled.

Publisher's summary
This program is read by the author.
A captivating family history that illustrates how small actions can have an outsized political impact.
Small acts of courage matter. Sometimes, they change the world. Our history books are filled with the stories of those who fought for democracy and freedom—for idealism itself—against all odds, from Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela to Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. These iconic struggles for social change illustrate the importance of engagement and activism, and offer a template for the battles we are fighting today. But using the right words is often easier than taking action; action can be hard, and costly.
More than a century ago, MSNBC host Ali Velshi’s great-grandfather sent his seven-year-old son to live at Tolstoy Farm, Gandhi’s ashram in South Africa. This difficult decision would change the trajectory of his family history forever. From childhood, Velshi’s grandfather was imbued with an ethos of public service and social justice, and a belief in absolute equality among all people—ideals that his children carried forward as they escaped apartheid, emigrating to Kenya and ultimately Canada and the United States.
In Small Acts of Courage, Velshi taps into 125 years of family history to advocate for social justice as a living, breathing experience—a way of life more than an ideology. With rich detail and vivid prose, he relates the stories of regular people who made a lasting commitment to fight for change, even when success seemed impossible. This heartfelt exploration of how we can breathe new life into the principles of pluralistic democracy is an urgent call to action—for progress to be possible, we must all do whatever we can to make a difference.
A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.
Critic reviews
"Ali Velshi is the soulful, smart, principled, passionate future of American TV journalism. His family’s story is astonishing and inspiring in equal measure—what a surprising and wonderful book!"—Rachel Maddow, host of The Rachel Maddow Show and author of Prequel
“Velshi shares his noble inheritance, coming from a family of justice seekers and freedom fighters who endured British Colonialism, South African Apartheid, and discrimination, and who traversed continents to find safe harbor. He insightfully applies their ancestral lessons to our current challenges, writing in compelling, clear and incisive fashion about how to be responsible to the places we call home and the people with whom we share our planet.”—Imani Perry, National Book Award-winning author of South to America
“A book of wisdom and humility that offers a different sort of defense of democracy, grounded in one family’s lived experience on three continents, and informed by the lesson that freedom and responsibility work together.”—Timothy Snyder, author of On Tyranny

After months of interrogations, he was sent to the US military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, as one of its first prisoners. Like the nearly 800 other men imprisoned at Guantanamo, Adayfi didn’t know why he was imprisoned or for how long. It has inspired people from John F Kennedy to The Beatles and became the '60s Bible of counterculture – all because of the timeless truths it shared. Each poem takes a different theme – pleasure, beauty, freedom, joy and sorrow – as the fictional Al Mustapha shares his thoughts and experiences as he prepares to travel back to his island home.

Story
The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Story
The history of the tablets translated in the following book is strange and beyond the belief of modern scientists. Their antiquity is stupendous, dating back some 36,000 years. The writer is Thoth, an Atlantean Priest-King, who founded a colony in ancient Egypt after the sinking of the mother country. He was the builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza, erroneously attributed to Cheops. In it he incorporated his knowledge of the ancient wisdom and also securely secreted records and instruments of ancient Atlantis.

Not long after the Berlin Wall fell, three teenagers became friends in the East German town of Jena. It was a time of excitement, but also of economic crisis: some four million East Germans found themselves out of jobs. Great learning experience
What a great journey!! I learned so much about apartheid and Ghandi and his movement. What an experience for your family to be a part of both. Thank you for sharing your understanding.
As for voting, I’ve always had an appreciation for the privilege and the duty and have tried to express that knowledge to those who have become blasé. I am concerned in my old age what is in store for my future family. After living through the age of Kennedy and MLK and the social reforms of the second half of the 20th century I worry that so much of that is being torn down. I pray it stops. Soon!! Hopefully with people like you speaking truth and speaking for social justice more will come to realize that moving backwards is not the way we should be going. Ahhh, but I preach to the choir. Loved the book! Loved your story! Loved your narration! I’ll be watching on MSNBC!

Engaging and Inspirational
I love to listen to Ali Velshi talk. Yes, he has a wonderful voice, but it is his intellect and insight that tends to make what he says an event of cognitive stimulation. In the history of his family’s migration he provides revelations about the history of conditions and attitudes that I really only had an inkling of. Caste systems and apartheid, bigotry and oppression, small minds and expressions of self-importance so outrageous they make the concept of a “bully” meek in comparison. I envy the richness of his family ties and, stressful though it often was, the meaningful experiences of their many journeys. I envy that he has garnered such insightful wealth from both the failures and wins of their lives. And I thank him for the inspiration of a most practical passion about viewing cultural differences as a bounty and not a threat. I’m sick to death of the small minds and self-serving attitudes of people with money and too much power working to foist their personal biases on everyone else. Thank you, Ali Velshi, for clarifying what I feel humanity should be.

Incredible book!
I can't remember the last time I was so moved by a book. Ali's history and remarkable telling of same, combined not just to entertain, but to inform and remind us of our responsibility to not to be complacent in our freedom. The Navy has a saying, "Complacency Kills". Our complacency will destroy this country if we don't act now.

We all need to do community services and fight for our democracy which we so often take for granted.
This book has an important message that every American should read and share with everyone they know.

The courage of the entire family ofali velshi.
I liked the clarity with which Ali described his entire family's history and struggles to arrive in a country that allowed them to express their ideas freely. My family came from Eastern European and Mediterranean decent. I can relate to Ali's ethnic struggles.

Meaningful
This is a recount of major significance to me. My great grandfather left Gujrati at the tender age of 8 years and joined his brother in Daressalaam. My inheritance come from his-hard work, enormous sacrifices and with guidance from the Aga Kan I have been fortunate to now be able pass our history to my children and grandchildren. Ali Velchi’s recount is a homage to our forefathers.
