Thirty-one-year-old J.D. Vance believes that he hasn't achieved anything great and the idea of any stranger paying money for his memoir is weird. The only "cool" thing he has accomplished is graduating from Yale Law School. Even though he has a joyful marriage, a good job, a comfortable home, etc., the reason for writing the book is not because he accomplished anything special. Vance wrote this book because he managed to achieve something ordinary, which others with a background like him usually fail to. He grew up amidst poverty, with one of his parents facing the curse of addiction all the time. Vance was raised by his grandparents, who did not even graduate from high school.
