Story
Bad views of God and harmful experiences lead many of us to deconstruct. But were right to run from the nonsense we've been taught and from those who hurt us. God After Deconstruction is not a book for people who want the status quo or who think conventional theology works. It isn't for people who just want to tweak a bit what they've been taught. Thomas Jay Oord and Tripp Fuller offer an open and relational vision of God.

Story
Growing up in a deeply evangelical family in the Midwest in the ‘80s and ‘90s, Sarah McCammon was strictly taught to fear God, obey him, and not question the faith. Persistently worried that her gay grandfather would go to hell unless she could reach him, or that her Muslim friend would need to be converted, and that she, too, would go to hell if she did not believe fervently enough, McCammon was a rule-follower. But through it all, she was plagued by fears and deep questions as the belief system she'd been carefully taught clashed with her expanding understanding of the outside world.

Story
Following on the questions raised by Brian McLaren in A New Kind of Christian, Tony Jones has written an engaging exploration of what this new kind of Christianity looks like. Writing dispatches about the thinking and practices of adventurous emergent Christians across the country, he offers an in-depth view of this new "third way" of faith - its origins, its theology, its views of truth, Scripture, and interpretation, and its hopeful and life-giving sense of community.

In David Coggins’s previous book, The Optimist, he tackles the techniques of fly fishing and meditates on its virtues, recounting his triumphs and frustrations. Now, in The Believer, he deftly mixes travel, local cultures, further fishing challenges (some knee-buckling in their disappointment), and details his own experience as life and love crowd his time to fish. Coggins embarks on seven far-flung fishing voyages, away from screens and social media, not answering his phone, reveling in humanity’s undying yearning for a quest, for the rituals and rites of passage that mark transition

The search for justice for this one man's death—his body found in broad daylight, with tape over his eyes, an undisguised hit—would deliver more than the truth. It exposed his status as an informant and led to protests, campaigns, far-reaching changes to British law, a historic ruling from a senior judicial body, a ground-breaking police investigation, and bitter condemnation from a US Congressional commission.

On July 12th, 1776, Captain James Cook, already lionized as the greatest explorer in British history, set off on his third voyage in his ship the HMS Resolution. Two-and-a-half years later, on a beach on the island of Hawaii, Cook was killed in a conflict with native Hawaiians. How did Cook, who was unique among captains for his respect for Indigenous peoples and cultures, come to that fatal moment? Hampton Sides’ bravura account of Cook’s last journey both wrestles with Cook’s legacy and provides a thrilling narrative of the titanic efforts and continual danger that characterized exploration.

“Love is our only hope,” Anne Lamott writes in this perceptive new book. “It is not always the easiest choice, but it is always the right one, the noble path, the way home to safety, no matter how bleak the future looks.” In Somehow: Thoughts on Love, Lamott explores the transformative power that love has in our lives: how it surprises us, forces us to confront uncomfortable truths, reminds us of our humanity, and guides us forward. “Love just won't be pinned down,” she says. “It is in our very atmosphere” and lies at the heart of who we are. We are, Lamott says, creatures of love.

Outstanding
I'm going to confess up front this is my first ever audio book. I loved reading the book(twice) so decided that I'd listen to the audio especially because it was narrated by the author. Much like the book it tr not only deeply moving, but as a reader/listener something to be experienced. and like the hardcover I'll listen to again.

Many hunting anecdotes (too many)!!
This was a less than average memoir because of its focus on hunting anecdotes. Using glimpses into life through anecdotes is fine (in the manner of Pasternak) but there seems to be very little criteria or importance as to which ones! He also completely avoids (except through an occasional remark) the important story of his ministry which fell apart (did they ask him to leave ? Did he decide to leave??) how has he dealt with his narcissism and emotional detachment… by the end of the story it seems that he has become a preacher of a new sort, with a new theology, platform, books, conferences, teaching, etc. (His desire for importance and admiration arising out of rejection continues to propel him). There is a superficial vibe that he has not really gone deeper to deal with these issues. Hunting is fun, it is healthy but is also sport and diversion. We no longer need to hunt to live. It is a sport filled with exhilarating moments and trophies and very posh hunting resorts. He seems to constantly seeking stimulation; perhaps what he needs is to spend real time in the desert (like the desert fathers he quotes). He wants to appear deep without any depth. It is as if he became a Darwinian naturalist and tries to connect this with God in the most tenuous way. It is clear that our enlightenment Evangelical and Protestant Christianity bear much of the responsibility, especially in formation of pastors through academic training. The system creates the thirst for degrees, books, competition, etc which fed right into his rejection. And now many of these seminaries teach “online,” where there is even less human formation. Until these structures are abolished in favor of places of true formation (which is done in Catholic monasteries and religious orders and Orthodox seminaries) we will continue to suffer the same outcomes. It is unfortunate that he did not take advantage of the places which are spiritually healthy, rather than simply suggest hunting as the solution.
