Publisher's summary

In There Is a God, one of the world's preeminent atheists discloses how his commitment to "follow the argument wherever it leads" led him to a belief in God as Creator. This is a compelling and refreshingly open-minded argument that will forever change the atheism debate.

Very compelling read

Very compelling book! It’s great to hear which details of the cosmological argument are the most convincing. I feel that Flew may have been a bit warmer toward Christianity than deism warrants after finishing the end of this book.

very interesting

really appreciated Flew's ability not only to listen and object to the other side (Theist) but more than anything his willingness to look at the evidence and be brave enough to change his stance after 60 years. I understand that he never confesses to a God of revelation but it really seems like he was well on the path to accpeing Jesus as his Lord and savior - really hope that is the case.

nothing groundbreaking if you follow the debate.

he followed the evidence wherever it led.
book is a personal account. could be expanded in more detail but would be harded for a popular book

Excellent book with phenomenal logic & great VO

A phenomenal short book that just obliterates so many standard atheist talking points. anyone who is questioning their position should read this book.

Enlightening and Enjoyable

The narrator is excellent - it's actually kind of a brain massage to have reasonable arguments spoken in an English accent with so much confidence and clarity, which is a really important trait in an audiobook. That being said, it took several listens for me to understand the arguments made for Flew's change of mind. It is most interesting that Flew absorbed the same kind of "God" of universal laws that Einstein believed in, yet went further based on his impressions that cellular complexity and consciousness demanded an intelligence beyond what evolution could explain.

Beautiful and Clear Presentation of Reasoned Argument to God

Clear, thoughtful and beautifully presented arguments lead to a proof of God’s existence. Arguments and an analysis of counter arguments are thorough and beautifully presented in a progression that it intuitive and well written making it easy to follow and a pleasure to read.

Powerful stuff

This is a very compelling narrative, all the more so given the source: one of the world’s foremost (former) atheists. Strongly recommend.

Easy to listen to & follow.

This is a very relatable explanation of Flew's reasons for conversion from atheism to belief. Very logically sound and easy to follow along with.

Sorely disappointing, waste of time

I was initially really excited to dive into this book. As an atheist, I like having my perspective challenged, and the prospect of hearing how a fellow atheist found faith, the promise of hearing a dialogue on that subject was genuinely exciting.

Instead, I first encountered an unhinged, rambling preface from another author that immediately soured the mood. The author of the preface uses his allocated real estate to rant about aspects of the atheist community that irritate him, which feels oddly selfish.

Once we get to the text proper, things get better, for a moment. The author is initially charming, and I enjoyed hearing some of his backstory. But the charm fades very quickly. There is an extended section detailing the university classes the author took, the philosophers he studied, etc. There is then an extended list of quotes from scientists who have had varying forms of belief in God. For multiple hours, there is little to no interrogation of those points, just a lengthy list that feels like a not so subtle mass argument from authority/ad populum.

And then, some of the actual statements start to trickle in, and it's further disappointing. All things seen and heard before. Making assertions like "science cannot answer these questions" or "science operates on faith," quote mining / taking quotes out of context. It all comes across as dishonest at worst, misinformed at best.

I couldn't make it through. I'm genuinely disappointed. Your mileage may vary.
