Story
Werner Herzog was born in September 1942 in Munich, Germany, at a turning point in the Second World War. Soon Germany would be defeated and a new world would have to be made out the rubble and horrors of the war. Fleeing the Allied bombing raids, Herzog’s mother took him and his older brother to a remote, rustic part of Bavaria where he would spend much of his childhood hungry, without running water, in deep poverty. It was there, as the new postwar order was emerging, that one of the most visionary filmmakers of the next seven decades was formed.

Hot dogs. Poor people created them. Rich people found a way to charge fifteen dollars for them. They’re high culture, they’re low culture, they’re sports food, they’re kids' food, they’re hangover food, and they’re deeply American, despite having no basis whatsoever in America's Indigenous traditions. You can love them, you can hate them, but you can’t avoid the great American hot dog. Raw Dog is part investigation into the cultural and culinary significance of hot dogs and part travelogue documenting a cross-country road trip researching them as they’re served today.

But most of all, he loves talking about film, and how they'd be a shit-ton better if only people would pull their asses out of their ears and listen to Gordy LaSure. Why are some films bad and some films terrible? How come just a handful of films (Titanic, Porky's, Dirty Harry) are any good at all? Gordy'll tell you How and Why, and he'll give you a shot of Wherefore on the side. And he doesn't shoot from the hip; he shoots from the gut.

Once in a blue moon, a book comes along that changes the world. The Origin of Species. War and Peace. 1984. And now, Cunk on Everything: The Encyclopedia Philomena, by Philomena Cunk. Philomena Cunk is one of the greatest thinkers of the 21st century, and in Cunk on Everything she turns her attention to our biggest issue: why are there so many books? Story
In the twilight of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a young cavalry officer is invited to a dance at the home of a rich landowner. There - with a small act of attempted charity - he commits a simple faux pas. But from this seemingly insignificant blunder comes a tale of catastrophe arising from kindness and of honour poisoned by self-regard. Beware of Pity has all the intensity and the formidable sense of torment and of character of the very best of Zweig's work. Definitive translation by the award-winning Anthea Bell.

Thelonious "Monk" Ellison's writing career has bottomed out: his latest manuscript has been rejected by seventeen publishers, which stings all the more because his previous novels have been "critically acclaimed." He seethes on the sidelines of the literary establishment as he watches the meteoric success of We's Lives in Da Ghetto, a first novel by a woman who once visited "some relatives in Harlem for a couple of days."

For 60 years Jewish refugees and their descendants have prospered in the federal district of Sitka, a temporary safe haven created in the wake of the Holocaust and the shocking 1948 collapse of the fledgling state of Israel. The Jews of the Sitka District have created their own little world in the Alaskan panhandle, a vibrant and complex frontier city that moves to the music of Yiddish. From electrifying horror author Nick Cutter comes a haunting new novel, reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian and Stephen King's It, in which a trio of mismatched mercenaries is hired by a young woman for a deceptively simple task: check in on her nephew, who may have been taken against his will to a remote New Mexico backwoods settlement called Little Heaven. Shortly after they arrive, things begin to turn ominous.

In attempt to discover why, Haruki Murakmi talks to the people who lived through the catastrophe, and in so doing lays bare the Japanese psyche. As he discerns the fundamental issues that led to the attack, Murakami paints a clear vision of an event that could occur anytime, anywhere.

Story
Montserrat has always been overlooked. She’s a talented sound editor, but she’s left out of the boys’ club running the film industry in ’90s Mexico City. And she’s all but invisible to her best friend, Tristán, a charming if faded soap opera star, though she’s been in love with him since childhood. Then Tristán discovers his new neighbor is the cult horror director Abel Urueta, and the legendary auteur claims he can change their lives—even if his tale of a Nazi occultist imbuing magic into highly volatile silver nitrate stock sounds like sheer fantasy.

Somewhere on the frontier between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a parallel time and place that might sound and smell very much like our own, but which looks completely different. The Disc’s very existence is about to be threatened by a strange new blight: the world’s first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land.

From the creator of the beloved and universally acclaimed television series BoJack Horseman, a fabulously off-beat collection of short stories about love - the best and worst thing in the universe. Equally at home with the surreal and the painfully relatable (and both at once), Bob-Waksberg delivers a killer combination of humor, romance, whimsy, cultural commentary, and crushing emotional vulnerability.

Publisher's summary
A comically unorthodox “biography”
Spanning from the birth of Ulysses S. Grant until his victory over the Confederacy, You, Me, and Ulysses S. Grant gives us an honest portrait of an American hero who struggled to balance love, soldiering, and the attainment of the American Dream.
Taking the accessible, pop history of Coe’s You Never Forget Your First and adding more of the nerdy, punk humor of Rainn Wilson or Judd Apatow, You, Me, and Ulysses S. Grant is for both history and humor audiences alike. Examining the validity of biography by hilariously breaking all the form's rules, this book removes the pomp to deliver a hopeful message of human potential: that the heroes we now venerate were also flawed, flesh and blood individuals and that we, too, are never too small to achieve great things. In bringing Grant to life, Brad Neely may have created his greatest cult classic yet.

Story
Hilarious, fascinating, and a roller coaster of dizzying, historical what-ifs, Napoleon's Hemorrhoids is a potpourri for serious historians and casual history buffs. In one of Phil Mason's many revelations, you'll learn that Communist jets were two minutes away from opening fire on American planes during the Cuban missile crisis, when they had to turn back as they were running out of fuel. You'll discover that before the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon's painful hemorrhoids prevented him from mounting his horse to survey the battlefield.

Masterpiece. An audiobook and a biography crying out for meaningful competition; only Richard Poe's narration of "Blood Meridian" can hope to offer such.

Delightfully Hilarious Yet Thought-Provoking
This book is stunningly well written and very self-aware! I appreciate that Neely doesn’t shy away from horrific topics but can smoothly transition back to absurd and bombastic hilarity. His narration makes the book even better! I found myself continuously laughing out loud while listening.

A must read for fans of Grant and Neely alike
20 years ago, Brad Neely unleashed upon the Earth a masterpiece of comedy, storytelling, philosophy and silliness that was "Wizard People, Dear Reader". Since then, I have longed for more similar content but nothing has scratched the itch like this book. Fans of "China, Il", "Harg Nalling", "Professor Bros", etc. may be befuddled by the narrator's voice but the hilarity and unexpected insightfulness is one and the same. I can't recommend this book to everyone, it would cause my grandmother to termor anxiously in her bloomers, but those familar with any of Brad Neely's work will find this is yet another link in his unbroken chain of comedic brilliance. My only complaint is that it has an ending.

Brad Neely is an artist
After enjoying Wizard People for many years I was excited to hear about Brad Neely’s latest book about Ulysses S. Grant. Jokes aside and voice aside, Neely invites you into this world with more character, more environment and more heart. It is certainly funny, and also hugely beautiful.

If you’re a fan of Neely’s work; this is his magnum opus to date
This guy’s work is so important to me, it’s indescribable. His words and his perspective are like like no other media / art I can ingest anywhere. I adored every second of this book for the following reasons; it’s funny as hell, it’s descriptive as hell, it captures some kind of universal human experience, it’s morally GOOD (and makes you remember why that’s important and not in a snobby self righteous way), and it enlightened me on people and things that I didn’t previously know enough about (even if there were slight artistic liberties taken, which can be considered part of the genre and thus totally excusable and for me was part of the charm).
I literally started crying in the last few minutes of this book because I was so absolutely gutted it was coming to an end. I would give anything for this guy to keep churning out work like this, seriously, it’s nourishment for the soul.
Anyways it’s damn good so just buy the stinkin thing and listen for yourself already

Almost Peak Neely
If you like Brad Neely you’ll like this
If you like Neely and American history you might love it
If you like American history, have an open mind, but are unfamiliar with Neely your mileage may vary
I was fully expecting a Neely voice, perhaps one of the professor brothers (and at times the voice he uses seems like it slips into Frank) but it took me a minute to get into the rickety old historian thing he was doing.
