Publisher's summary

The Golden State Killer. The East Area Rapist. The Original Night Stalker. The Visalia Ransacker.

The monster who preyed on Californians from 1976 to 1986 was known by many aliases. And while numerous police sketches tried to capture his often-masked visage, the Golden State Killer spent more than 40 years not only faceless, but nameless.

For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. To be sure, the chances of obtaining closure—or any form of justice—after so many years were slim to none, at best.

Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. After a decades-long hunt, a suspect was behind bars. Could it be that evil finally had a name?

Delivering all-new details about the investigation and a stunning final act to the events of Michelle McNamara's haunting bestseller, I'll Be Gone in the Dark, this is the true story of how the suspected Golden State Killer was captured, as told, first-hand, by those closest to the case:

Paul Holes—the forensic criminologist and retired Costa County detective who spent 20 years trying to crack the Golden State Killer case, and finally did.

Jim Clemente (Host)—a retired FBI profiler and former New York City prosecutor who has investigated some of the highest profile criminal cases in U.S. history, including the Unabomber.

Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

Listen...even if you have already read McNamara

This book offered a different perspective on the Golden State Killer because it included the stories of the victims. Well worth a credit even if you feel you know a great deal about the case. I would have liked more information on the killer's personality and life, but it is probably too soon after his capture to know much about him anyway.

This time it's real mystery crime resolved

Another cold case resolved that takes 42 years of investigation and that's made me interested to listen even though that title sounds brutally, I still have the courage to listen into it. First, I want to know how Paul Holes identified the Golden State Killer. Most of all who is this "evil"?! (small word "evil" is the absence of good, no greatness for short. So I've approved the title 100% and at last, evil has a name and he is Joseph James DeAngelo. On October 19, 2019, I was able to know the mystery. This audiobook gives us hopeful that no matter how long it takes, we can find justice especially to the victims and their families. I really enjoyed the Audible Original. :)

Could not stop listening.

We know how it ends, but the retelling was riveting. I especially appreciated hearing the voices of those involved either as victims or investigators.

Loved it - professional and thorough

Like a lot of people, I’ve listened to and read just about everything I can get my hands on regarding EAR-ONS/GSK. I’ve listened to and seen Jim Clemente on any number of shows and podcasts. I found the content riveting and the format super easy to listen to and informal. Hearing from victims and family members was nice, and one simply can’t overstate hearing most of the story from Paul Holes himself. Truly incredible work, lovely way of relating it in a different medium.

Well done

Whether you are familiar with this true crime story or not, this is a well put together summation of the crimes, the victims, the investigation, and the ultimate capture of the perpetrator and how they got him - told by the actual victims, family members and law enforcement professionals involved in the case. It does include some graphic description but they do a good job of reminding and preparing the listener of that. Highly recommend.

Absolutely enthralling

Even though I feel like I know this case, Paul provides such a great insight into the victims. Thank you!
