Resumen del Editor

For years, ex–Navy SEAL Maxwell Moore has worked across the Middle East and behind the scenes for the Special Activities Division of the CIA, making connections, extracting valuable intelligence, and facing off against America’s enemies at every turn. And then...news of a potentially devastating coalition: What if two of the greatest threats to the security of the United States were to form an unholy alliance? The Taliban is trying to exploit a Mexican drug cartel to which they supply opium as a means to bring the fire of jihad to the hearts of the infidels. It is up to Moore, and his team, to infiltrate and dismantle the drug cartel, even as they hunt for those who would bring the ultimate terror and destruction to the streets of America. In a story that races from the remote, war-scarred landscapes of the Middle East to the blood-soaked chaos of the U.S.–Mexico border, Tom Clancy once again delivers a heart-stopping thriller that is frighteningly close to reality.

Against All Enemies

Steven Weber did a good job narrating this book. I don't think this book was as good as the early Tom Clancy books. This book had his usual multiple plots going and coming together at the end of the book but just lacked something that was in the earlier books. I like the detail and found the airport security problems interesting as well as the action in Pakistan. I almost feel that Tom Clancy is just sitting back on his laurel and hiring some else to do the hard work of writing.

Nothing to do with the Campus series.

I was reluctant to get this one because of the low ratings. I was listed as book 1 of the campus series a spin off from the Jack Ryan series. literally in the last 90 seconds of the book they make one Campus reference. I was disappointed in that but overall not a bad book but not on par with anything from the Jack Ryan series. don't get it expecting it to be a typical Clancy book. It is a similar genre and if that is all you need then give it a try.

Stay with it. It's worth it..

If you could sum up Against All Enemies in three words, what would they be?

Stay with it

Any additional comments?

True, as other reviews it is a little slow to start with and get to grips with some of the characters in the complex plot. BUT, stay with it...It is an excellant plot and story line.

An introduction into Clancy

What was one of the most memorable moments of Against All Enemies?

The development of Moore through the story is gripping and he is one of my new favorite action stars of all time.

Be patient.

Would you consider the audio edition of Against All Enemies to be better than the print version?

The narrator brought this story to life. Every character (from many different countries) all had different accents. I could tell which character was speaking by that alone.

What did you like best about this story?

Our hero, Max Moore and the great narration.

What about Steven Weber’s performance did you like?

Each character had a different voice. Some books, even though the story may be great, is ruined by poor narration. I would love to see Steven Weber and Lou Diamond Phillips (the Jack Ryan series) read all the books I listen to.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It was a slow starter, but then I have found that most Clancy books are that way. I knew if I stayed with the early chapters the stoey woukd unfold.

Entertaining and true to current events.

Yes, Clancy can be overly technical at times. Yes, the story isn't the most original of concepts.

However, like all Clancy novels I was amazed at all the seemingly self-contained story threads slowly culminating into an epic event. But Against All Enemies is slightly different in this aspect...there are actually two main events that take place,...two seprate but parallel stories taking place at the same time with the main protaginists and antgonists coincidentally cross paths.

Perhaps because I live near the US/Mexican border myself, the stories of the drug cartel side seemed both plausible and realistic so I could identify with many of the plot points. And then the other side of the coin, the Islamic jihadists that wish to re-create another September 11 like event....the descriptions are scary.

In this novel, Clancy moves away from all the high tech James Bondish gadgets of some of his past novels, and gets down in dirty with conventional weapons, car chases, and ruthless streetfights. I was also surprised by the body count in this book as well. Characters, both big and small on all three (yes, three) sides meet their maker and rosey endings aren't all that rosey for anybody.

I realize some criticize Clancy for his verbose and lengthy origins on some characters, but I am one who enjoys it. I really begin to understand that characters motivations and actions that much more.

Overall, I thought it was an entertaining book and action sequences were jaw dropping, although at times a tad predictable. Descriptions of border towns, especially in Mexico are dead on and a nice departure from Clancy's otherwise American or European tendenancies.

The narrator was just fine. I imagine it can be hard to voice dozens of chracters expecially with various accents. It wasn't stellar, but it wasn't bad either. A few times it was hard to figure out who was who, but rarely.

Awesome performance

Really great story with superb performance, accents, and dialect. Too bad it’s so close to true life.

It is not bad

This book was first published 2 years before Clancy's death. I suspect he had little to do with the storyline. No, it is not a Clancy book. It is barely connected with the Ryanverse.

That said, this is not a bad novel. It is not a great novel, but it is not bad. Tedious, in parts, but overall not bad. Fortunately, this is the only "Clancy" novel written by this author. He did not quite get the Clancy style correctly.
