Resumen del Editor

Picardie, France, 1964, the exclusive Clos du Lac sanitarium: A man is discovered standing in the therapy pool. But he's not there for his health; someone has chained him to the bottom and left him to die very, very slowly.

Inspector Lucas Rocco believes it's an unusual and elaborate method of execution. But nobody seems to have heard or seen anything, the staff are resolutely unhelpful - or dead - and ministry officials sent from Paris to 'assist' attempt to impede Rocco's efforts to find answers.

It is soon clear the Clos du Lac is no ordinary sanitarium, and holds secrets that the authorities feel are better left hidden. And a high-level kidnapping mounted in an attempt to derail France's new trade agreements with China means Rocco now faces threats from more than one quarter...one of them a rogue government assassin.

Adrian Magson was born in the UK but lived and was educated for a time in France. Prior to turning to writing, he worked in sales and marketing which took him across Europe. He now lives near Oxford.

Edge of your seat excitement!

Adrian Magson writes this series with Lucas Rocco as the protagonist--an inspector who was moved from the police in Paris to a small village in rural Picardie as part of a government "initiative" to bring qualified police to under-served areas of France. At first (in previous books) he is working out his issues about relocation and getting to know people. In this book, he is pretty well settled, and finds himself now in the middle of a case that is both intriguing and highly dangerous.

It begins with him arriving at the Clos Du Lac sanitarium after a man is found murdered in the swimming pool there, but quickly springs to showing several high level cover ups and kidnappings (involving business men interested in trade agreements with China and even other police) that threaten Rocco's life at almost every step. The Clos Du Lac is not what it seemed at first, and neither are many of the people involved.

This series is a little unusual for me--I usually don't read books that are edge of your seat kinds of excitement, but this one is truly exceptional. I have read them since the beginning--and find the gradual development of the characters very good, the writing is excellent--brings a wonderful sense of place as most of the action alternates between Picardie and Paris, and the plots are intricate and well-resolved. This one is one of the better books in the series.

My only reason for giving the narrator 4 stars is that his British accent seems a little out of place for a French location. Otherwise, he is actually quite a good narrator. Highly recommend (the entire series)!
