El filósofo estoico Epicteto destila en este manual de vida, publicado en el año 125, las claves de una existencia plena. Su influencia llegó hasta el mismo Marco Aurelio. Esta edición traducida del griego por José Ortiz y Sanz adopta el estilo minimalista y directo propio del estoicismo.
Epicteto vivió parte de su vida como esclavo en Roma. Sus enseñanzas se conservan en esta sucinta obra, transcrita por su discípulo Flavio Arriano alrededor del año 108 d. C.
La filosofía de Epicteto es intensamente práctica. Dirige a sus alumnos a centrar la atención en sus opiniones, ansiedades, pasiones y deseos, para que “nunca dejen de obtener lo que desean ni caigan en lo que evitan”. La verdadera educación consiste en aprender a distinguir lo que es nuestro de lo que no nos pertenece, y en aprender a asentir o disentir correctamente de las impresiones externas. El propósito de sus enseñanzas era hacer a las personas libres y felices.
Epicteto nació en el año 55 en el actual sudoeste de Turquía. En su infancia llegó a Roma como esclavo del liberto Epafrodito, que a su vez había servido como secretario del emperador Nerón. Alrededor del año 93 fue exiliado, junto con los restantes filósofos residentes en Roma, por el emperador Domiciano. Se trasladó a Nicópolis, en el noroeste griego, donde abrió su propia escuela, adonde concurrieron numerosos patricios romanos. Entre ellos se contaba Flavio Arriano, que llegaría a ser un respetado historiador y conservaría el texto de las enseñanzas de su maestro en Enquiridión. La fama de Epicteto fue grande, mereciendo más respeto en vida del que había gozado Platón.
