Resumen del Editor

A renowned psychiatrist reveals how trauma affects children—and outlines the path to recovery.

"Fascinating and upbeat.... Dr. Perry is both a world-class creative scientist and a compassionate therapist." (Mary Pipher, PhD, author of Reviving Ophelia)

How does trauma affect a child's mind—and how can that mind recover? In the classic The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog, Dr. Perry explains what happens to the brains of children exposed to extreme stress and shares their lessons of courage, humanity, and hope. Only when we understand the science of the mind and the power of love and nurturing can we hope to heal the spirit of even the most wounded child.

excellent and informative

I am a psychotherapist working with children in the foster system and found this book to be very helpful in my work. I have also worked with adults and find that much of this can be applied to work with them, as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone working with children or adolescents in any capacity, either providing therapy, medical services, teaching, tutoring, or any other role. I also highly recommend this book for all psychotherapists regardless of the population you work with.

Excellent

Nice book on human phycology, childhood tram-a. One important thing to learn from this book is to give a child a loving care from the day the child is born. Every loving touch, care, attention matters. This will help them grow in their full potential as a good adult ready to face the world in a good manner.

A must read for humanity

I discovered this book when I was researching how to live through failure and embrace it as a strength. As I started reading more about this book I was intrigued and gladly so. This book helped me learn how to cope with the inevitable failure cycle. The fear of the unknown is paralyzing. In my research I have found that failure is about losing and in my quest to be an optimized human, it’s important to work through that loss. The author teaches us that to facilitate recovery, the loss of control and powerlessness felt must be counteracted. The only way to restore a normal stress response to unfortunate and horrifying events is to restore the feeling of control. You'd rather know what is going to happen (be that awful or not) than not know. It's better to know misery is coming than to be miserable not knowing is coming. The book is not a light casual read. I found that I could only read a chapter at a time before needing space to reflect. The stories that Dr. Perry talks about are horrific and (sadly) true. I don’t think I was emotionally prepared for some of the stories, but now I am convinced that this book deserves attention from all parents, educators, policymakers, courts, law enforcement, therapists, and every adult who wants to support the community.

Excellent clinical overview for layperson

Having no medical or therapeutic expertise, I found this to be a good book to explain how childhood trauma disrupts development and how we can help children to heal. The cover describes it as “upbeat” but that is a stretch - maybe compared to what therapists hear on a daily basis but not for the layperson! In any case, the troubling true stories were essential in helping me understand the issues being discussed. Great narration too!

Insightful

This book was insightful in the world of childhood trauma, and the adverse experiences children face. The narration was well done, and everything stated had a purpose. I appreciated the ending of the book and the reflection that took place. This book is not for the soft of heart, but everything in it is necessary to know if you plan to work with children in any capacity and can benefit all readers.

Very informative

I really enjoyed the book, although heartbreaking in several areas, it told enough to move on from each story and take away some good knowledge as well. I have 4 adopted children at home, and I am on a continuing journey to help them heal.
