Life in Pieces

The Easy Life of Henry Monkosky is a very interesting audiobook. It follows the life of a monkey. The world at large seems to pay no mind that this monkey can talk, has a pig friend named bacon and works at the local complaint office.

First, Michel Young delivers a great performance. I really enjoyed that, as the story is told from the first person perspective, he gave Henry Monkosky an original voice you can enjoy throughout. He captures the feel of the character wonderfully, as he does with the uniquely voiced other characters throughout the book. I dare say this is probably the best narration I've heard from Young so far (yes, even more than the production of a certain imaginary tale he has produced) due to his versatility and consistently delivering the characters' voices from beginning to end.

As far as the story goes, well, I wouldn't exactly call it a story, story. Though there is a subtle love story woven throughout the chapters, (which, honestly felt a little awkward given the circumstances) it's more a series of small stories and interactions with the main character, Henry Monkosky. Kind of like how Forrest Gump is a series of events rather than a straight narrative. And that's fine by me. I like it overall.

There were a few things I didn't care for in the book, particularly a couple of the middle chapters. They become quite vulgar, even with the innocent and loving voice of Henry Monkosky saying them. Being the prude that I am, I had to skip past those things that I shan't not relate. Honestly, those chapters felt so out of place with the rest of the audiobook, I think it would be better if they were removed from it completely.

Overall, I really liked The Easy Life of Henry Monkosky. Young's superb narration lifts the interesting story to another level and I'm sure many would enjoy it.
