Publisher's summary

As the world mourns the loss of Diana, Princess of Wales, one young woman uncovers a forgotten story of passion, betrayal, and a scandal surrounding the British crown in this unforgettable novel by the best-selling author of The Secret Wife.

Two women who challenged the Crown.

Divided by time. Bound by a secret...

1911: When 15-year-old Mary Kirk meets Wallis Warfield at summer camp, she’s immediately captivated by her fearless, brazen, and self-assured personality. And Wallis has a way with the boys who are drawn to her like moths to a flame. Though Mary’s family isn’t crazy about her new best friend, she steadfastly stands by her side - even years later when they’re adults and rumors swirl about Wallis and her reckless behavior with none other than the Prince of Wales. But when Mary’s loyalty to Wallis comes into question, their friendship will be put to the ultimate test.

1997: After a romantic proposal in Paris, Rachel and her fiancé Alex are in a cab when suddenly the car ahead crashes. They’re stunned to learn Princess Diana is in the car. By the wreckage, Alex finds a heart pendant with an engraved letter “J” and Roman numerals XVII and gives it to Rachel to hold. Haunted by the crash and Diana’s subsequent death, Rachel is intrigued when she discovers that Di had visited the last home of Wallis, the Duchess of Windsor, only hours before the accident. Eventually, the revelation of a long-forgotten link to Wallis Simpson leads Rachel to the truth behind a scandal that shook the world...

Wonderful

Loved this book, both the story and the audio performance were done well. Books like these are the reason I love historical fiction. Don't hesitate to find out for yourself.

Fact or Fiction? We May Never know!

Wonderful telling of the somewhat shadowy stories surrounding Princess Di's untimely death in a car crash in 1997 and the background of why King Edward VIII abdicated the throne in 1936. I had no idea when I began this book that it was based in actual facts and that Mary Kirk and Wallis Warfield were real historical people. When I finally understood that this story was based on the lives of two real women, I stopped the story and did some research. I absolutely LOVE reading fictionalized accounts of real people -- especially ones who were so interesting and impactful.

Even while the historical story line was evolving, I was just as intrigued by the fictional story line of Rachel and Alex. Both stories were told so well! This isn't a literary masterpiece by any means -- but it is well worth the 13 hours of your time.
READ or LISTEN to this story -- you will not be disappointed!

Outstanding narration!

I so enjoyed this story by Gill Paul and the narration by Laura Aikman was outstanding and the icing on the cake ! A great mixture of history and a hint of gossip with present day events colliding with the past, great read.

I recommend this book and The Secret Wife also by this author.

Phenom Narrator

she switches from accent to accent without a hitch (maybe a small one with the Scots Brogue) but all and all a treasure of a story and a refreshing insight from Gills P.O.V. A must read for Anglophiles!!

Bad to the bone with a soft spot

Well there were two time periods, I’m not sure that the more up-to-date at the time 1997, one was important, but it was entertaining as well. It was fascinating learning about Wallace Simpson as a young girl as well as learning about her last name, and who it came from and why. Ernest Simpson was just a steppingstone tell her next stone. There was no epilogue to fill in some of the facts or not facts, but a nice escape from reality and hopefully some truth behind it all. Thank you for the vacation in the brain during the cold snap across the country.
