Publisher's summary

Gorgeous, stubborn Esme Brentmor, daughter of a disgraced lord, is used to a wild, dangerous life among the tribes of Albania, to whom her father is the legendary, controversial Red Lion whose death she's courageously vowed to avenge - even if it leads to her own. Instead, her quest finds her rescued by the most unlikely (and very reluctant) hero! Lazy and spoiled, Lord Varian St. George has gambled away his heritage and lives on his considerable looks, charm and wits. All he wants is the good life, and instead, he finds himself in rough country, with a tempestuous whirlwind of a female who's as savage as he's civilized. How did this termagant become his responsibility? And how can he escape?! Yet as he and Esme plunge headlong into even more peril, he may surprise even his own jaded self and become the man that Esme (foolishly) believes he is!

Not my favorite

I love Loretta Chase and I Love Kate Reading, however, this story just isn't my favorite. Kate Reading does her normal phenomenal job narrating but she doesn't have much to work with. The characters are OK but I just could not get into the story. It was convoluted and confused. More an adventure story.

Not a repeat listen for me

I've tried several times to get into this book and finally got through it. But....I either slept through or skipped some chapters. While I appreciate the creativity of the story, it was confusing for me. There were side-line stories that just never got pulled together to create one cohesive story. The characters were all too complex and in some cases down right annoying. The heroine was one of those annoying ones. Sooo....I won't be listening to this one again.

One of the best narrators ever....

The overall story was awesome and I enjoyed the listen...but I'm not super crazy about the Albanian story line....just my preference.

Brilliant writing; brilliant narration.

Loretta Chase is a wizard with words and dialogue. Kate Reading knows how to deliver the words and dialogue. A terrific book and a great delivery.

Too long

, But it seemed to go on much too long. The misunderstandings that she had toward her future husband were rather annoying and silly after a while.

A different kind of Historical Romance

A romance involving English gentry in Albania is a bit off my chart of expectation. The story itself was very good in a lot of areas; and very boring and lackluster in others. I'm not really sure how to explain why it was a laborious listen, when overall, it is a decent story.
One thing that did bother me a lot was the narrator. Kate Reading has narrated a lot of books and her characters, especially the main character, all sound the same. There were times I thought I was listening to The Host, or Into the Wilderness. Maybe that is just me being incredibly OCD.
I listened to this book mainly because I realized I had the 3rd book in the series in my library. Now I am going to read the 2nd...& probably the 4th too. We will see if it gets better.

A Beautiful Love Story with Many Layers

A beautiful love story enriched with history, incredible cultural differences, and fun intellectual wit. It was extremely difficult to put down. A fun and intetesting story in so many ways.

This one didn't connect. It was more going though the motions. I recognized the story. The characters through different Really were not.

Cross cultural 19th century romance enchants

Loved this story with its cross cultural 19th century romance. Characters include a dilettante English Lord who must learn to embrace responsibility; a feisty tomboy heroine who must learn trust, two even feistier grandmothers, a precocious 12-year-old boy and beguiling villain. Superbly narrated by Kate Reading.

complicated

this is the second time I've heard this book. I remember being confused the first time, but in the interim I've read other books in the series, especially relevant was Captives of the Night, and pieces of the puzzle fell into place this time round.
