About this listen

This book (winner of the Great Lakes Great Reads Award) chronicles the second portion of Loreen Niewenhuis's Great Lakes Adventure Trilogy. In this installment, she took a 1,000-mile walk along stretches of the shorelines of all five Great Lakes.

The book takes the listener on a ground-level walk through the beauty, the history, and the tender ecology of Lakes Erie, Huron, Michigan, Superior, and Ontario.

A 1,000-Mile Great Lakes Walk also leads us on an exploration of self, as the author sets out on foot to explore a region.

Like her 2011 book of a similarly-epic long trek around Lake Michigan, this grand hike on the shores of five magnificent bodies of freshwater explores the natural and human history of the Great Lakes, while raising important questions about preserving our wild places and protecting fragile ecosystems on which we all depend.

I think this book won't appeal to everyone but it did to me. it was a way to expand your knowledge of the great lakes and the history along there shores. it made me want to visit places the author mentioned. Also I realized that a hike doesn't have to be all or nothing. There could be many ways to take your own inner band outside journey. It was far better than reading geography band history as text books.

A journey to go on with the author.
