Publisher's summary

A boy like no other embarks on a transformative journey of magic and self-discovery in the next enchanting Whimbrel House novel by Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charlie N. Holmberg.

Merritt Fernsby’s life has changed considerably since he inherited Whimbrel House. He’s engaged to Hulda Larkin, who opened his eyes to the uncanny. And he’s grown quite protective of his uncle Owein—several generations, and iterations, removed. Owein is presently inhabiting the body of a mixed-breed terrier when Merritt receives a missive from none other than Alexandrina Victoria, the Queen of England: I am interested in your dog.

It’s the queen’s duty to the peerage to keep British wizardry empowered. Her offer: England will find a human vessel for Owein, marry him into the royal family, and add this remarkable soul-shifter to its lineage. For Owein, a boy trapped in the body of a pup, it’s a dream come true. How can Merritt refuse? However, once they are in London and in consortium with a necromancer, the situation doesn’t feel right, both with their hosts and the house they inhabit. Owein is having nightmares. And Hulda’s premonitions warn of danger in Merritt’s future. Clearly, someone doesn’t want them in town.

But after two hundred years of being cursed to drift, Owein is determined to chart his own destiny. He’s ready to defy whatever chaos is coming. After all, Owein is the master of chaos, and with Merritt and Hulda’s love and magical support, he can overcome anything.

Critic reviews

“Merritt Fernby and Hulda Larkin are back in the third installment of the Whimbrel House series (after Heir of Uncertain Magic, 2023). Fans of the series and fantasy tales will be pleased with this story.”Booklist

“Holmberg delights us with magical antics and nonstop action. She makes us care even more about the characters…This is a beautifully conceived fantasy, and Holmberg makes it clear that Hulda and Merritt’s adventures are far from over.”Bookreporter

Book of Chaotic Reading!

The third book in this series it’s just as good as the first two. With no spoilers here I can say that I am excited for any other sequels. I loved the introduction of the Druid people as well. Author continues her excellent world-building.

Outstanding third volume

With great narration and the same skillful plotting, characterization, and world building as the first two novels in the series, this story takes Merrit, Hulda, and Owein to London. Danger, intrigue, and the chance for Owein to be human again set high stakes.

There are clear plot points left open, signaling that a fourth novel is in our future, but no cliffhangers.

Continues to Enchant

If you love the characters, you will continue to love the series. The story picks up right where it left off with Holda and Merrit (I may be spelling their names terribly wrong) planning their wedding until they are called away to explore an opportunity for Owayne. As the opportunity unfolds, magical chaos revolves around the trio and you have to try to guess the culprit before the clock runs out- or worse! I’m too invested in the magical world at this point, I hope there is another book very soon!

This book was a perfect chef's kiss from start to finish. Please keep this series going Charlie!
Side note: Baptiste is one of the best side character's I've read in a long time.

I'm a Fan

I really like Charlie N. Holmberg. I love her imagination and where her stories go. I love how different her worlds are when she builds them. I love that this one while set in the USA and London she still added a touch of her own. I am excited this world is not finished.

I really like all of the characters. The twist in this story was a big surprise to me. I was not expecting it to go this way. Loved the magic part and how she explains how it works.

There was a bit of romance in the book and I thought it was so cute. Hulda and Merrit just work!

It's just good!

A teeny bit more on the adult side than previous books in the series, but still just fine for the whole family.

This isn't just a gratuitous story so we can hear how Owain (Audio "reader") ends up. I'm excited for the next installment, if it comes, but this book also doesn't leave you hanging.

Something today unique: I appreciated the interesting intersection between Christianity, Druidism and the origin of magic in this world.

I hope there's a fourth book

I have absolutely adored this story. The characters are strange and vivid and endearing. each having their own trauma and hardship but also just connecting and loving each other so well. I'm guessing this is probably the final book, but I would definitely read a fourth one if the author wrote it. it's got just the right amount of cozy suspensefulness and found family romance.
