Publisher's summary

Emma decided to skip the gym and went home early. It was the last easy decision she made because she found her roommate being raped by her boyfriend. She had two choices: Call the cops and be killed by his family's mafia connections or kill him first and hope to survive.

There was no choice to her. She killed the bastard first and went to the one person who could protect her: Carter Reed. He's a weapon for the rivaling mafia family, but he's also Emma's secret. Not only was he best friends with her brother, but she's the reason he became that weapon in the first place.

Mr ALPHA - Those eyes, all those dark Promises

Any additional comments?

Everything changes for Emma the day that she alters her normal routine and walks in on her best friend and roommate being raped by her boyfriend. Something inside her snaps when she realizes she has two choices - turn him in and risk punishment by his father’s mafia connections or kill him and run... The pain and suffering she watches her roommate endure, even for moments, makes that decision for her. She retrieves a gun and kills him herself. Sealing her fate and changing her life. Forever...

On the run with nowhere to go she has only one place to turn. Her brother’s oldest friend and now a hit man for a rival mafia group: Carter Reed... Carter Reed is absolutely swoon worthy, he’s super intense and a totally hot alpha male...

I cannot imagine the horror that Emma has had to survive to get to where she is at the beginning of this book, but to handle what was thrown at her the moment she walked into her apartment…I don’t want to imagine those feelings.

I really liked Carter’s character. He’s strong, but has this sweet and loving side that he only shows Emma - I loved Carter and Emma’s relationship. He’s totally alpha and does everything in his power to protect her.

Now if you are into a lot of description in the sex scenes you won’t get that here. You know when they are having sex, but not so much about what is actually going on. I actually liked the scenes as they were, it didn't distract from the actual story-line that was going on and you could see where they where and when their relationship was growing.

Lucy Rivers does a fantastic job narrating. Very enjoyable :)

The Heroine’s inner dialogue drove me crazy!

I almost stopped the book 6 or 7 times, in the early chapters. The Heroine, Emma, has to be the most indecisive, wishy-washy Heroine ever invented. Her inner dialogue was too descriptive and way too wordy. I wanted to scream, “ GET ON WITH IT!!!!!’. She couldn’t make a decision and stick with it, to save her life. It got better in the later chapters but, for example, Carter would be trying to explain something important to her and she would just decide she didn’t feel like listening. Ok, you stupid girl, someone is trying to kill you, it may be in your best interest to learn all you can in order to keep from getting killed.🤬

In addition, there were only three short chapters written from Carter’s POV. I think there should have many more or none at all. These three short passages didn’t fit.
The book did get better, as it progressed, so I did complete it. However, if I would have spent a credit on it, I would have returned it. I will not register to it. Since # 2 in also in the Romance package, I’m going to give it a try.

Rooting for a happy ending

This story started with a bang, showing the strength Emma had when protecting her chosen family. I loved the history that Emma had with Carter Reed (even though much of it was tragic) that allowed their relationship to move forward with leaps and bounds without feeling rushed. Their HEA felt earned and like it was a long time coming. There were also several side characters who intrigued me and left me wanting to know more. I thought Lucy Rivers did a good job bringing Emma to life, so much so that I was often frustrated with her decisions and wanted to shake her. Lol. Luckily the character of Amanda did a good job standing in for me several of those times. I’m excited to dive back into this universe.

Good Read

This book started out strong but died out a little, but not to the point where I put it down. I am glad I finished it. I ended strong and I can't wait to start the next book.

Okay.

3/5 rating. I liked parts of it. Overall: a bit too much melodrama for me.

I'd recommend the book for people who don't mind female characters who faint and go into shock in stressful situations, and who blame themselves for everything.

Love Mafia Books

I don't know why I always take so long to read a Tijan book, because the ones I've read are always so good. I enjoy a really good mafia story and this one is no different. Such a good book. Now Emma was a little bit whiny but still a great book. Almost finished with book 2 and loving it just as much.

Hot!

I was hooked from the start and couldn’t put it down. Emma’s world detonates spectacularly in a wickedly scary way that held me riveted. Carter and Emma’s history helps her to pick up the pieces, and my heart bled for all the trauma Emma has endured. So much chemistry and steam, it was scorching.

It’s a good book, but…

The book is good, I love Tijan. But… the narrator!! Not a good vibe for this book and her trying to do guy voices was terrible.

Where IS The Rest?

Where does Carter Reed rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I would put this in my favorite category but not on my favorite listens.

Would you be willing to try another book from Tijan? Why or why not?

yes I would, I think she has potential for a good story line build up.

Have you listened to any of Lucy Rivers’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No this was the first, I will try her again though.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

My extreme reaction was who chopped up this book? There seems to be so much more to this story that was deleted out of the book. In the first chapter it throws you right in but it feels incomplete in a way. There is no character build up, barely any description in her story telling. I just feel like this book could have been twice the length and could have been great rather than just OK.

Any additional comments?

It just fell a little short with me. I have a feeling the editor and publisher shredded it. Because the book has a feel like eventually we will know more but it never got there.
