Publisher's summary

Where Are Critical Theory and the Social Justice Movement Taking Us?

Critical theory and its expression in fields such as critical race theory, critical pedagogy, and queer theory are having a profound impact on our culture. Contemporary critical theory's ideas about race, class, gender, identity, and justice have dramatically shaped how people think, act, and view one another—in Christian and secular spheres alike.

In Critical Dilemma, authors Neil Shenvi and Pat Sawyer illuminate the origins and influences of contemporary critical theory, considering it in the light of clear reason and biblical orthodoxy. While acknowledging that it can provide some legitimate insights regarding race, class, and gender, Critical Dilemma exposes the false assumptions at the heart of critical theory, arguing that it poses a serious threat to both the church and society at large.

Drawing on exhaustive research and careful analysis, Shenvi and Sawyer condemn racism, urge Christians to seek justice, and offer a path forward for racial healing and unity while also opposing critical theory's manifold errors.

Excellent grasp of a nebulous topic

Shenvi and Sawyer do an excellent job of explaining and tracing critical theory from its origins to its logical conclusion.

Brilliant!

This book is a must read, especially if you are a Christian or pastor who is trying to understand critical theory and has thus far found the topic confusing or convoluted, but know that it is somehow contrary to Christianity. These authors use primary sources and careful logic to mount an accurate, balanced, nuanced, and therefore devastating critique of critical theory. It is an argument that proved very helpful to me, and one that I will return to often and not soon forget.

Discernment of contemporary critical theory

I thought the narrator did a fine job. The content was helpful. Critical theory was thoroughly explained with quotes from primary sources which I found eye opening. I will be reading the print copy that I have to review everything I just heard again. I want to remember as much as possible of this work.

Essential reading, thoughtful and loving presentation

Big thanks to Shenvi & Sawyer for this careful take on various critical theories, with a challenging call to orthodox Christians to greater faith and repentance as we interact within the church, and with our culture. No straw men here. Just primary sources, logic, and scripture, including clear presentation of law and gospel throughout. Five stars.
